Job Description

As a Painter in the Services Division, you will be responsible for painting fabricated parts, components, or units in a paint booth and prepping items in a blast bay. Your typical day will involve parts preparation using sandblasting and hand sanding, applying industrial primer, paint, and two-part corrosion resistant undercoating. You will also perform final inspections, prioritize work, use various tools, maintain a clean workspace, and operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and railcar movers. This role requires adherence to safety, quality standards, and active participation in continuous improvement.
Must have:
  • Responsible for painting fabricated parts, components, or units in a paint booth.
  • Work in a blast bay to prep items needing paint.
  • Perform parts prep through the use of sandblaster, hand sanding tools, and other methods.
  • Apply industrial primer & paint using a pressure pot spray system or gravity fed spray gun.
  • Apply two-part corrosion resistant undercoating.
  • Clean, touchup, and final inspection of finished railcar mover before shipment.
  • Prioritize work to ensure production areas and warehouse receive parts as needed.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools following appropriate methods and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean/organized work area through daily 5S and maintain equipment accordingly.
  • Comply with all stated Nordco safety requirements and company policies.
  • Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other lifting devices.
  • Safely operate finished mobile rail car movers.
  • Train new employees.
  • Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations.
  • Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.
  • Complete production and quality assurance forms.
  • Participate actively in team meetings and group discussions.
  • Interface with engineering to accurately communicate information.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement activities or events as required.
  • Adhere to Quality Management System Requirements.
  • Perform 5S activities.
  • Ability to read and comprehend procedures written in English.

  • Shift: 6 am-4:30 pm CT Monday-Thursday

Who will you be working with?

Our production floor comprises of a host of different crafts, each with their respective duties, and types of expertise. As a member of the team, you will work closely with all departments and key stakeholders.

How will you make a difference?

As a member of the Services Division, you will be responsible for painting fabricated parts, components, or units in a paint booth. You will also work in a blast bay to prep the items needing paint. Team members may assist less experienced team members with knowledge and expertise. Base rate for this role is $22.00/hour with possibility for higher pay depending on experience.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience

  • 3-5+ years in a production painting environment
  • Technical Skills
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Ability to operate a computer to read and input data
  • Ability to operate hand tools and read measuring devices
  • Ability to read and interpret 3D prints/schematics to complete standard work

What about the physical demands of the job?

  • Employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, crouch, bend, work underneath equipment, reach above shoulders, and climb
  • Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Employee will be working in the typical conditions of a manufacturing environment including seasonal variation in temperatures and occasional exposure to manufacturing fumes or by-products
  • You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
