Job Summary

Job Description

The Reliability Engineer ensures the durability, performance, reliability, and sustainability of lottery retail point-of-sale terminals, public self-service kiosks, interconnection devices, and related equipment. This role involves designing, executing, and reporting rigorous testing protocols, analyzing failure modes during product design through implementation, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance product quality and compliance with industry and corporate standards.
Must have:
  • Develop and implement comprehensive reliability test plans for lottery POS terminals, self-service kiosks and devices.
  • Conduct accelerated life testing to identify weaknesses and predict product lifespans.
  • Compile and analyze performance reports and process control statistics.
  • Develop mathematical models that define product and sub-system reliability.
  • Conduct mean time before failure (MTBF) calculations for all products.
  • Ensure that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards.
  • Recommend design or test methods and statistical process control procedures.
  • Provide recommendations to a variety of components, products and processes design problems.
  • Simulate real-world usage conditions to validate performance.
  • Work with operations and field service teams for beta testing and field trials.
  • Conduct testing using early prototypes and mockups.
  • Publish results of Engineering Verification Testing (EVT) and Design Verification Testing (DVT).
  • Process and respond to factory Production Verification Testing (PVT).
  • Coordinate product submissions for agency testing at independent labs.
  • Personally conduct tests as necessary and maintain engineering test lab.
  • Analyze test data and field failures to identify root causes of electromechanical issues.
  • Document and report failure modes, proposing design improvements.
  • Work closely with hardware, firmware, software, manufacturing, and field service teams.
  • Provide technical guidance to ensure designs meet regulatory standards.
  • Maintain detailed test reports, reliability models, and documentation.
  • Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Maintain informative updates related to advancements in reliability engineering.
  • Drive initiatives to improve testing methodologies and enhance product robustness.
Good to have:
  • Experience with testing POS systems, kiosks, or similar interactive devices
  • Familiarity with lottery or gaming industry standards
  • Product design experience

The Reliability Engineer shall ensure the durability, performance, reliability, and sustainability of lottery retail point-of-sale terminals; public self-service kiosks and devices; interconnection devices, and other related equipment and accessories. This role involved designing, executing, and reporting rigorous testing protocols; analyzing failure modes during product design through implementation; and collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance product quality and compliance with industry and corporate standards.

Job Duties

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive reliability test plans for lottery POS terminals, self-service kiosks and devices, including environmental, mechanical, and electrical stress testing (e.g., thermal cycling, vibration, humidity, special paper conditions, paper movement, power situations, intrusions, shipping, etc.).
  • Conduct accelerated life testing to identify weaknesses and predict product lifespans.
  • Compile and analyze performance reports and process control statistics; investigate and analyze relevant variables potentially affecting product and processes.
  • Develop, coordinate and conduct technical reliability studies and evaluations of engineering design concepts and design of experiments (DOE) constructs.
  • Develop mathematical models that define product and sub-system reliability
  • Conduct mean time before failure (MTBF) calculations for all products and throughout product changes.
  • Ensure that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards
  • Recommend design or test methods and statistical process control procedures for achieving proper levels of product reliability.
  • Provide recommendations to a variety of components, products and processes design problems
  • Simulate real-world usage conditions to validate performance under heavy customer interactions and diverse environmental conditions.
  • Work with operations and field service teams for beta testing and field trials of early-deployed product and prototypes.
  • Conduct testing using early prototypes and mockups.
  • Publish results of Engineering Verification Testing (EVT) and Design Verification Testing (DVT)
  • Process and respond to factory Production Verification Testing (PVT)
  • Coordinate product submissions for agency testing at independent labs. Coordinate product issues and corrections for agency tests.
  • Personally conducts tests as necessary - maintain engineering test lab.

Failure and Root Cause Investigations:

  • Analyze test data and field failures to identify root causes of electromechanical issues using tools like FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) and 8D Problem-Solving.
  • Document and report failure modes, proposing design improvements to enhance reliability and user experiences.

Collaborate & Cross-Functional Support:

  • Work closely with hardware, firmware, software, manufacturing, and field service teams to integrate reliability considerations into the product development lifecycle.
  • Provide technical guidance to ensure designs meet regulatory standards (e.g. UL, CE, FCC, and others) and any lottery-specific industry requirements.

Performance Monitoring and Metrics:

  • Maintain detailed test reports, reliability models, and documentation for internal teams and regulatory audits of contract manufacturers worldwide.
  • Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders, including engineering, procurement, manufacturing, product management, and other related teams.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Maintain informative updates related to advancements in reliability engineering, electromechanical systems, and lottery industry product trends.
  • Drive initiatives to improve testing methodologies, maintain efficient costs, and enhance product robustness.

Qualifications:

  • Education - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related fields from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience - 5+ years of experience in reliability engineering, preferably with electromechanical systems or customer-facing hardware.
  • Experience with testing POS systems, kiosks, or similar interactive devices is a plus.
  • Familiarity with lottery or gaming industry standards are beneficial.
  • Product design experience is a plus
  • Understanding of industry technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of agency certification tests and test procedures
  • Basic understanding of embedded systems and software-hardware integration.
  • Experience with environmental test chambers, vibration tables, 3D Xrays, and electrical test equipment.
  • Knowledge of electromechanical components (e.g. displays, touchscreens, printers with print mechanisms, electronic controllers, motor-driven mechanisms, paper-handling, sensors, image readers, industrial cameras, etc.)
  • Proficiency in reliability testing tools and methodologies (e.g. HALT/HASS, Weibull analysis, Minitab, or similar.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a detailed-oriented mindset.
  • Familiarity with the 8D problem-solving methodology.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently of collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Certified Reliability Engineering (CRE) or similar industry-recognized certification.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt or higher.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a lab environment, occasionally lifting equipment up to 50 pounds safely.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% for field tests, investigations, or independent lab visits, or supplier visits, internationally.

  • Education - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related fields from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience - 5+ years of experience in reliability engineering, preferably with electromechanical systems or customer-facing hardware.
