Job Description

As a Security Engineering Manager for Detection and Response, you will lead a team to build, scale, and enhance systems for improving incident response to security threats. This role involves acting as a technical leader, coaching team members, ensuring top-tier detection, logging, and automation systems in a cloud-native environment, and fostering a collaborative team culture while working closely with the wider security group.

What you’d be doing in this role

As a Security Engineering Manager for Detection and Response you’ll be involved in:

  • Lead a team dedicated to building, scaling, and enhancing systems that improve incident response to security threats.
  • Act as a technical leader, using engineering expertise to guide project direction and execution.
  • Coach and mentor team members to support their growth and capability.
  • Ensure detection, logging, and automation systems remain top-tier within a cloud-native environment.
  • Balance delivering technical outcomes with cultivating a high-performing, collaborative team culture.
  • Collaborate closely with members across the Detection & Response (D&R) team and the wider security group.

You're probably a match if you have

  • A strong engineering background with proven experience driving technical outcomes that strengthen detection and response capabilities in a high paced work environment
  • Hands-on experience in detection and response, particularly in detection engineering, logging pipelines, and security automation.
  • Experience delivering and maintaining detection and response capabilities in cloud-native environments (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Ability to balance people leadership with technical decision-making, including guiding teams through complex projects and necessary trade-offs, whilst continuing to support each individuals growth goals
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working cross-functionally with security, engineering, and product teams

Beneficial Experience (not required, but helpful)

  • Knowledge and experience with Kubernetes (k8s) and containerized environments
  • Sound knowledge of forensic fundamentals and investigation techniques
  • Experience supporting incident response efforts, including helping coordinate and support major incidents

About the team

The Security Group is responsible for protecting Canva systems and data from information security threats. Our teams work together, and with other groups, to deliver preventive and detective controls and processes that reduce security risk. The group runs programs across Enterprise Security, Application Security, Risk Management, and Threat Detection and Response domains.

The Detection and Response group are responsible for leading Canva’s understanding of the threats that we face, continuously improving our ability to detect relevant actions of threat actors, and leading the company’s response to any potential intrusions.
