The Data Science team at Cognite plays an essential role in creating data-driven solutions, enabling our clients to make high-impact business decisions. As a Data Scientist at Cognite, you will work on complex problems alongside industry leaders. You will be part of multidisciplinary teams composed of data engineers, solution architects, and project managers. Together, you will focus on configuring, deploying, and industrializing digital solutions in sectors such as oil and gas, energy, utilities, and industrial manufacturing.

You will also interact directly with clients to understand their objectives, facilitate discovery workshops, and provide recommendations on possible strategies and potential obstacles.

The Data Science team is part of the EMEA Delivery team, within our Global Delivery organization. This organization is truly global, with offices in Oslo (Norway), Austin & Houston (Texas, USA), and Tokyo (Japan).

We bring together a diverse team of project managers, data scientists, data engineers, and solution architects, with business expertise in the oil and gas, energy, utilities, and manufacturing sectors.

We are responsible for the successful delivery of the projects we undertake — projects that are flexible, scalable, and promote the adoption of our products. In short, we uncover high-value insights from previously untapped data, enabling operators and decision-makers to transform the operations of heavy industries to make them more efficient and sustainable.

As a Senior Data Scientist, you are responsible for the following, without limitation:

  • Develop and deploy scalable solutions for client use cases in the oil and gas, industrial manufacturing, and energy & utilities sectors using Cognite's key capabilities.
  • Participate in intensive use case generation workshops with business experts to understand problems and their connection to data.
  • Perform data cleaning and exploratory data analysis.
  • Implement physical models or machine learning models in Python and deploy them in our model hosting environment.
  • Design and develop domain-specific information and data models.
  • Apply Generative AI (GenAI) techniques to improve data-driven decision-making in client use cases.
  • Create dashboards in Grafana, Power BI, Plotly, or Dash to visualize solutions.
  • Use and contribute to solution models and best practices within the Data Science team.
  • Mentor and coach junior team members.
  • Collaborate with data engineers, project managers, and solution architects to ensure project deliveries and enable our clients to fully leverage our industrial DataOps platform.
  • Support clients and partners in performing data science tasks with Cognite products.

We believe most of these points should match your experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field, or in mechanical, systems, electrical, or industrial engineering.
  • Over 5 years of full-time professional experience as a data scientist (preferably in a related industry), or as a data scientist with business expertise in the oil and gas, energy, maintenance, or industrial manufacturing sectors.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL. Experience with Python in a production environment is a plus.
  • Experience with machine learning methods and techniques, statistics, and/or optimization.
  • Experience with Git.
  • Experience in client relations, with external clients.
  • Experience with managed cloud services such as GCP, Azure, or AWS is a plus.
  • Business knowledge or good understanding of asset performance management in the oil and gas industry — including, for example, production optimization — is a major asset.
  • (As key advisors on CDF, we expect our data scientists to have a good understanding of our clients' data, and to be able to support them in solving their problems, particularly those related to production optimization).
  • Enjoy working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to deliver autonomously, mentor, and support others internally.
  • Love challenges and dare to set ambitious goals to drive innovation.
  • Be humble enough to ask for help, and appreciate sharing knowledge with others.

You don't meet all the requirements? We are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace. So, if this role excites you but your past experience doesn't perfectly align with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might be the right candidate for this or other roles.
