Job Description

We are part of PayPal’s Risk Organization, supporting the Chargeback Platform in the Disputes domain. Our team builds and maintains scalable, secure backend services that manage disputes efficiently, ensuring seamless experiences for customers and merchants. You will design, develop, and maintain backend systems and APIs using Java, with strong emphasis on performance, reliability, and security. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end features, follow best practices in coding, testing, and deployment, and contribute in an agile environment. Key responsibilities include solving large-scale challenges, optimizing performance, and ensuring fault tolerance.
Must have:
  • Deliver complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations)
  • Operate with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices
  • Apply knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions
  • 5+ years of backend development experience and a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
  • Proficiency in at least one backend language Java
  • Advanced proficiency in backend development with either Java EE frameworks, including experience with Spring MVC, or Hibernate
  • Experience designing and implementing RESTful services, focusing on scalability and reliability, using Java
  • Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to code reviews and design discussions
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Experience with databases (SQL, NoSQL)
  • Strong understanding of database design, including SQL and NoSQL databases, and experience with ORM tools
Good to have:
  • Experience with large-scale, high-performance systems
  • Knowledge of the payment processing industry and relevant regulations
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Contributions to open-source projects
  • Understanding of risk systems architecture or disputes management workflows
  • Event driven architecture like Kafka, Rabbit MQ

What you need to know about the Role:

You will design, develop, and maintain backend systems and APIs using Java, with strong emphasis on performance, reliability, and security. You’ll work with cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end features, follow best practices in coding, testing, and deployment, and contribute in an agile environment. Key responsibilities include solving large-scale challenges, optimizing performance, and ensuring fault tolerance. Experience with RESTful APIs, microservices, databases (SQL/NoSQL), and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) is highly valuable. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential to influence both technical direction and business impact.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Delivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles.
  • Advises immediate management on project-level issues
  • Guides junior engineers
  • Operates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices
  • Applies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
