Google Cloud's software engineers develop next-generation technologies. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll work on Dataproc, enabling open-source data analytics workloads in the cloud (Spark, Hadoop, etc.). Responsibilities include writing and testing code, participating in design reviews, code reviews, enhancing Apache Spark and Lake House technologies (Iceberg, Hudi, Delta Lake) for performance and reliability, and contributing to documentation. The role requires strong Java programming skills, experience with big data technologies, and expertise in distributed systems. You will contribute to improving the debuggability, observability, and supportability of open-source technologies.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of programming experience with Java.
  • Experience developing with Spark, Hive, or similar analytical engines.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
  • Experience designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience developing with Iceberg, Hudi or Delta.
  • Experience with Database or Data Warehouse internals.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $166,000-$244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Write and test product or system development code.
  • Participate in, or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies.
  • Review code developed by other developers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
  • Enhance Apache Spark for performance, reliability, security, and monitoring, and simultaneously enhance Lake House technologies like Iceberg, Hudi, or Delta Lake for performance, security, and monitoring.
  • Contribute to and adapt existing documentation or educational content based on product and program updates, as well as user feedback, while also extending open-source technologies like Apache Spark, Hive, and Trino to improve their debuggability, observability, and supportability.
