This Senior/Staff Systems Integration Engineer/Scientist role at Illumina involves developing high-quality microarray products by integrating hardware, instrument, software, and chemistry components. Must have:
  • Function as a key technical representative on project teams
  • Possess expert level knowledge of product components and end-to-end workflow steps
  • Perform hands-on work for testing and integrating array end-to-end workflows
  • Lead experimental planning and execution to test and optimize product performance
  • Own Design Verification Test (DVT) deliverables, protocols, and reports
  • Apply system knowledge to develop verification and validation strategies
  • Develop appropriate hardware, software, or workflow configurations for V&V studies
  • Contribute to investigation and resolution of system/sub-system level technical problems
  • Set technical goals with minimal guidance and foster efficiency in experimental planning
  • Independently drive and direct work to complete engineering studies
  • Manage large data sets for programs using advanced analytical techniques
  • Contribute to and lead functional initiatives like best practice documentation

Position Description

Illumina develops the world’s leading next generation DNA sequencing (NGS) and microarray platforms which are revolutionizing industries such as healthcare, life sciences, forensics, agriculture, and clinical research.

To support the growth of Illumina, we are looking for a Senior/Staff Systems Integration Engineer/Scientist to join the Array System Integration Team within Illumina Product Development. You will participate in the development of high quality, robust microarray products through the integration of hardware, instrument, software, chemistry components and workflows. This is a hand-on position which will require you to lead the design and execution of test plans to optimize system performance, to diagnose any issues through troubleshooting experiments and root cause analysis and to analyze and manage large data sets generated from the assay workflows.

Position Responsibilities:

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Functions as a key technical representative on project teams.
  • Expert level knowledge of the product components and end-to-end workflow steps to guide the workflow development.
  • Hands-on work for testing and integrating of the array end-to-end workflows - hardware, software, chemistry/reagents, application components and data analysis pipelines etc..
  • Lead on the experimental planning and execution to test and optimize product performance.
  • Owner of Design Verification Test (DVT) deliverables. Fully understand project goals or product requirements to create DVT protocols and reports. Track and log of issues encountered during development.
  • Apply system knowledge to develop verification and validation strategies including the requirements for hardware and software, reagents, and consumables.
  • Develop the appropriate hardware, software or workflow configurations for the system or prototype to be used in V&V studies.
  • Regularly contributes to the investigation and resolution of system/sub-system level technical problems. Set technical goals with minimal guidance, foster efficiency in experimental planning and execution across departments.
  • Independently drive and may direct the work of others to complete engineering studies.
  • Management of large data sets for programs. Use advanced analytical techniques to interpret complex data.
  • Contributes to and may lead functional initiatives such as best practice documentation.

Position Requirements:

  • Demonstrate understanding of Array/Sequencing systems and techniques.
  • Experience for planning and execution of DOE for problem solving/root cause investigation.
  • Hands-on wet-lab experience on one or several of the fields below: molecular biology, biochemistry, assay development and automation solution development.
  • Experience writing and executing test plans/protocols to verify/validate product performance and robustness.
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
  • Expert user of advanced analysis tools. Competent and comfortable with managing and analyzing large data sets for programs.
  • Competent IT knowledge and computer skills.
  • Solid communication, presentation and writing skills.
  • A desire to be a part of a fast paced, multidisciplinary, and dynamic environment.
  • Detail oriented and highly motivated.
  • Work effectively with cross-functional project team.
  • Multidisciplinary approach to problem solving.

Preferred Experience/Education/Skills:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5-8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree; or a PhD with 0-5 years’ experience; or equivalent experience.

  • Previous experience working with Illumina Array or Sequencing systems.
  • Previous experience with assay/process automation development.
  • Previous experience using Python or other programming tools for the analysis of large data sets.
