We’re looking for a skilled and motivated Software Engineer with hands-on experience in Java (or any object-oriented programming language), React, and cloud platforms like AWS. An interest in AI/ML and agentic systems is a plus.

This is a P2-level role, where you will contribute as a strong individual contributor, collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, and participate in the design and development of scalable features. You’ll help implement modern technical solutions and contribute to the integration of intelligent systems across the platform.

About this roll* (Responsibilities)

As a Software Engineer at Toast, you will:

• Collaborate with UX, Product, QA, and Engineering teammates to deliver scalable SaaS applications.
  
  
• Write clean, maintainable, production-grade code across the stack.
  
  
• Build and maintain backend services and APIs using Java or similar OOP languages.
  
  
• Develop user-friendly, responsive interfaces with React.js.
  
  
• Participate in design discussions, propose technical approaches, and build prototypes.
  
  
• Contribute to code reviews and support shared team ownership of quality and performance.
  
  
• Work with SQL (PostgreSQL, SQL Server, etc.) and NoSQL databases.
  
  
• Deploy and manage applications on AWS using services such as EC2, Lambda, RDS, and S3.
  
  
• Support the integration of AI/ML features such as LLM-based capabilities and agent workflows.
  
  
• Learn and contribute to LLM platform usage (OpenAI, Claude, Bedrock, etc.) where applicable.
  
  
• Document your work and contribute to internal knowledge-sharing and technical artifacts.
  
  
• Engage in team rituals like sprint planning, backlog refinement, and incident reviews.
  
  
• Follow and promote engineering best practices for performance, testing, and maintainability.
  
  

Do you have the right ingredients* (Requirements)

• 3–5 years of backend development experience using Java, Python, Golang, or similar OOP language.
  
  
• 1–2 years of experience with frontend technologies, ideally React.js.
  
  
• Proficiency with relational databases and understanding of NoSQL systems.
  
  
• Solid understanding of microservice architecture and distributed systems fundamentals.
  
  
• Hands-on experience with AWS or other cloud platforms.
  
  
• Familiarity with software design patterns and best practices in code quality and testing.
  
  
• Interest or exposure to AI/ML technologies and agentic workflows is a plus.
  
  
• Strong problem-solving skills, a collaborative mindset, and an eagerness to learn and grow.
  
  
• Effective communication and a willingness to engage across functions.
