Job Description

The Wabtec Mining team is seeking a Senior Engineer to develop, implement, and validate control systems for heavy haul off-highway electric drive mining vehicles. This role involves engaging with customers, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and leading the full lifecycle of control system development, from requirements to field testing, to help mines achieve production and sustainability goals.

  • Strong background in developing and testing control systems for motors, alternators, and power electronics
  • Skilled in using simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or similar for system modeling and analysis
  • Experienced in designing systems and performing detailed circuit analysis
  • Lead the definition and development of control systems for new products and enhancements
  • Design and specify control software to meet system performance and reliability goals
  • Develop power circuit concepts and simulations, and define requirements for power components
  • Ensure control system designs meet EMC and EMI compliance standards
  • Document system-level requirements and cascade them to subsystem and component development teams
  • Coordinate system and subsystem testing across internal facilities, third-party labs, and customer sites
  • Conduct hands-on testing of power circuits and control systems at various locations
  • Plan and manage project activities, track progress, and communicate status updates
  • Troubleshoot and resolve field issues related to control systems and power circuits
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to their technical development

Who will you be working with?

The Wabtec Mining team delivers world class electric drive propulsion systems for heavy haul off-highway mining trucks with payloads up to 400T. These systems introduce new technologies to help mines meet their production and sustainability goals.

How will you make a difference?

The Senior Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and validating control systems for off-highway electric drive mining vehicles. This role offers the opportunity to engage directly with customers and collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout product definition and project execution.

What do we want to know about you?

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required; advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering are strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in an engineering role, with a proven track record of technical leadership and innovation.
  • Strong background in developing and testing control systems for motors, alternators, and power electronics.
  • Skilled in using simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, or similar for system modeling and analysis.
  • Experienced in designing systems and performing detailed circuit analysis.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Report directly to the Mining Controls Engineering Manager and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Lead the definition and development of control systems for new products and enhancements to existing product lines, covering the full lifecycle: customer requirements, concept selection, modeling, simulation, implementation, verification, validation, and field testing.
  • Design and specify control software to meet system performance and reliability goals.
  • Develop power circuit concepts and simulations, and define requirements for power components.
  • Ensure control system designs meet EMC and EMI compliance standards; support related testing and certification processes.
  • Document system-level requirements and cascade them to subsystem and component development teams.
  • Review and assess subsystem and component development outputs, including verification results.
  • Coordinate system and subsystem testing across internal facilities, third-party labs, and customer sites.
  • Conduct hands-on testing of power circuits and control systems at internal labs, external facilities, customer proving grounds, and operational mine sites.
  • Plan and manage project activities, track progress, and communicate status updates, business impacts, and key developments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve field issues related to control systems and power circuits as assigned.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to their technical development.
  • Travel periodically (typically 1–3 weeks at a time) to support testing activities and field investigations.

What about the physical demands of the job?

Candidates will be required to periodically work in a full-scale propulsion system test lab and support field testing at customer proving grounds and mines.

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary range for this role is between $89,100.00-$126,900.00 The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. More information on offered benefits, which include health, welfare, and retirement, are available at mywabtecbenefits.com. Other benefit offerings for this role may include an annual bonus, if eligible.
