We're crewing up on Julián, a new animated feature film from five time Oscar nominated studio Cartoon Saloon (WolfWalkers, The Breadwinner, Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kells and Late Afternoon). The 2D film marks the feature directorial debut of Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Louise Bagnall (Late Afternoon), with the title based on the graphic novel "Julián is a Mermaid" by Jessica Love.


Julián is the second collaboration between Guru Studio, Cartoon Saloon and Aircraft Pictures, following the 2018 Oscar-nominated film, The Breadwinner.


We’re looking for a visionary and talented 2D Nuke Compositing Supervisor to help us bring this inspired story to life!


Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Art Director, Directors and Producers to develop, create, and maintain the final look and compositing workflow for a 2D production, referencing provided briefings and materials, including ToonBoom 2D, Moho, FX animations, and matte paintings
  • Assemble and finalize Hero-shots, Master-Shots, and Sequential-shots in Nuke, using as a reference the provided briefings and materials whilst ensuring that work is done within scope as well as within the creative and technical guidelines
  • Lead and supervise a team of pre-compositing and compositing artists to assemble and finalize shots in Nuke, using as a reference the provided briefings and materials ensuring that work is done within quota and scope and follows the creative and technical guidelines
  • Proactively communicate and troubleshoot any arising issues as well as find and implement effective solutions swiftly
  • Create and communicate shots and briefings to the compositing team ensuring the creative vision and technical standards of the production are clearly communicated and maintained throughout
  • Work closely with the Production Manager to assign work to the compositing team, ensuring that work is completed within schedule; flag and troubleshoot any issues as they arise
  • Regularly review shots and provide day-to-day support and feedback to the compositing team as needed
  • Regularly review shots in a sequence to ensure technical and creative integrity and continuity throughout
  • Attend and prepare reviews, briefings and technical reviews as needed and required.
  • Provide support and mentorship to the team, especially to Junior Artists, and collaborate closely with the production team to maintain a positive and inclusive work environment
  • Proactively create, maintain and continuously improve the compositing workflow ensuring a smooth, efficient and effective running of the compositing pipeline as well as hand-overs within, to and from the compositing department
  • Work closely with the technical directors and pipeline developers to create and maintain a smooth pipeline and act as a voice of the team in respect of the pipeline environment
  • Perform additional duties that naturally fall under the responsibilities of a Compositing Supervisor


Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar lead/supervisor Compositing role on a fast-paced production environment
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Excellent leadership skills, ability to delegate work efficiently
  • Strong team-player with the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of departments and different personalities
  • Strong ability to multi-task and a creative and proactive approach to problem-solving
  • Knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the latest compositing techniques and visual trends
  • Expert Knowledge of Nuke, Shotgrid, Autodesk Maya
  • Expert Knowledge of CG, 2D and compositing pipelines and workflows
  • Expert Knowledge of post-production pipelines
  • Knowledge of programming/writing tools for Nuke (a plus)
  • Knowledge of ToonBoom Harmony, Moho, Photoshop
