Vision 
All the recent innovations in the Gen AI space have set the basis for a change in the way we work and how we interact with technology. Gen AI offers an unprecedented ability to understand our requests and generate high quality context in multiple modalities, including text, image, video and music, among others. While the first wave of Gen AI innovations has had a special focus on the cloud, there is strong impetus for offerings that live on the edge, where one can tightly control and secure personal data access, improve responsiveness and can reduce execution costs. 

In this context, the AI Lab, within the HP’s Future Technologies and Experiences team (FT&E) is conducting applied research in Gen AI with a focus on the edge. The resulting innovations will influence the HP Personal Systems product portfolio. 

Job details 
The FT&E AI Lab is looking for an individual to join as Principal AI/ML Scientist in our AI Lab team. The team will explore and push the boundaries of the state-of-the-art research in applied Gen AI research with a focus on edge applications, and work with different stakeholders to bring amazing technology into products. The candidate will be involved in the research and development of generative AI models and will work with other team members and business unit partners to develop proof-of-concept prototypes and help move technologies from research to product. The role will involve research, development and model optimization for edge use cases. The role will involve technical and leadership activities. Technical activities include model research, model fine-tuning and optimization for edge, synthetic data collection, model error analysis, continuous model improvement and monitoring. Leadership activities include mentoring junior engineers/scientists, working with academic/external/business unit partners/stakeholders, owning roadmaps for key features through deployment, publishing papers at top conference venues etc. 

 
Responsibilities 
Proposes and executes innovation that brings meaningful impact to HP products/services 
• Provides technology leadership in AI/ML with deep expertise in at least one AI/ML domain 

Leads a particular AI research workstream, plans milestones and deliverables, aligns priorities and facilitates trajectory from research to product. 

Leads innovation that improves on the state of the art  

Develops Generative AI (LLMs, LVMs, LMMs) models for target applications 
Develops model optimization for edge applications, including architecture search, distillation, quantization, fine-tuning and deployment. 
• Works with technologists and business unit leaders on model strategy from concept to deployment  

Works with University partners on joint research efforts 

• Represents the team in subject area of expertise when interfacing with stakeholders 
• Provides guidance, training and mentorship to less experienced staff members. 
Prepares and makes presentations, produces patents, and publishes in industry/academic conferences. 
• Manages and creates relationships with business partners to evaluate and foster AI innovation, provides domain-specific expertise in cross-organization projects/initiatives. 
• Ties insights into effective visualizations communicating business value and innovation potential. 
• Assures insights are communicated regularly and effectively, reviewing designs, models and data compliance. 
 
Education & Experience Recommended 
• Graduate Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience or demonstrated competence. 
• Typically has 10+ years of work experience, preferably in data analytics, statistical modeling, machine learning, or a related field. 

A track record of demonstrated innovation (patents/publications/product contributions)  

A track record of product contributions and technology leadership 
 
Preferred Certifications 
Python, Pytorch, Tensorflow, Huggingface, Gen AI application development, local edge deployments (llama.cpp/ONNX/DirectML/OpenVino/Vitis)
