Job Description

At H&M, Assistant Managers are called Department Managers, responsible for supporting store sales and profit goals by ensuring an excellent customer experience. They lead and develop their team, focusing on performance, values, and leadership, while adhering to H&M standards and legal requirements. This role involves analyzing KPIs, optimizing scheduling for sales and service, and actively participating in daily store operations. The Department Manager also manages recruitment, training, and performance, ensuring a safe and compliant workplace, and can assume full store responsibility when needed.
Must have:

  • Provide information on allocations and replenishments based on sales trends.

  • Communicate sales performance, company culture, and training areas to store team.
  • Handle health, safety, legal, and security issues according to H&M standards and local laws.
  • Perform supervisory responsibilities regarding leave requests, wages, dismissals, and corrective actions.
  • Be able to assume full responsibility for the store in the absence of the Store Manager.
  • Consolidate company culture by encouraging feedback.

General Job Summary:

At H&M, our Assistant Managers are called Department Managers. You are responsible for supporting the store's sales and profit goals by establishing a plan to provide the best customer experience in the department and throughout the store. The Department Manager will ensure we have the best team and support their development. They will also work on succession planning, talent development, and structured performance management of the team based on results, values, and leadership. The Department Manager will work in accordance with legal requirements and H&M standards, policies, and procedures to meet customer and colleague expectations.

This position reports to the Store Manager and has direct responsibility for the following positions: Department Supervisor, Sales Associate.

Your Daily Tasks*

Sales and Profits

  • Regularly analyze and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to sales and profit for the department in collaboration with visual merchandisers. Ensure actions are taken to maximize sales. Support visual merchandisers by ensuring the necessary working hours and staffing for successful execution are guaranteed.
  • In collaboration with the store management team, ensure that store activities, H&M standards, and best practices are followed through scheduling to maximize conversion and enable commercial activities (moves, sales, events, etc.) and provide excellent customer service, while respecting the commercial budget of allocated hours.
  • Plan and prioritize with your team actions that have a clear impact on sales and ensure the implementation of the Commercial Guide.
  • Ensure that H&M customer service standards are always met through active coaching and by leading by example.
  • Actively participate in the execution of operational routines and in-store tasks, including, but not limited to, processing delivery trucks, garment processing, markdowns, department moves, and price changes.
  • Actively prevent losses and ensure the department follows appropriate safety guidelines.
  • Provide information to the Store Manager and regional teams on allocations and replenishments to ensure garment quantities based on sales trends and inform the Store Manager of all potential risks, threats, and opportunities related to the competitive landscape.

Staff and Teams

  • Manage the team responsible for recruitment, training, development, and succession planning in accordance with H&M best practices.
  • Evaluate and manage the performance of department team members; provide regular feedback, implement dialogues, development plans and follow-ups, and take action to improve performance and support team member development.
  • Clearly communicate sales performance, company culture, and training areas to the store team through daily "Behind the Seams" meetings and by participating in weekly leadership meetings.
  • Ensure that health and safety, legal, and security issues are handled in accordance with H&M standards and local laws, to ensure the safety of employees and customers at all times.
  • Perform supervisory responsibilities in accordance with H&M policies and applicable laws, including, but not limited to, leave requests, wages, dismissals and corrective actions, and employment decision-making.
  • Be able to assume full responsibility for the store in the absence of the Store Manager.

  • Transferable work experience of 1 to 2 years is welcome.
  • You have the ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • You are able to coach and advise staff on management techniques and progressive disciplinary measures.
  • You can stand for long periods, bend, stretch, make repetitive movements, push, pull, and carry objects (mannequins, clothes, bags, torsos, etc.) over a short distance.
  • You must be able to climb a ladder and use a step stool.
  • Be available, including evenings and weekends.
  • Basic computer skills such as navigating and interacting with software, as well as data entry, are required.
  • You may need to travel to support other stores and for training.
