About The Role

Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an Associate/Senior Editor to cover the broad research field of optoelectronic devices and engineering.

Do you love science but feel that a research career isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about the natural and technological world? Do you enjoy reading paper and keeping up to date with developments outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the editorial team of Nature.

Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an editor that will further our aim to publish the world’s best original research covering the broad area of optoelectronic technologies: from concept development and physical understanding through material and device engineering across areas such as photovoltaics, LEDs, displays and optical sensors, including in-sensor computing technologies. An expansion towards related thermal technologies, such as thermoelectrics or calorics, is also possible and encouraged. The ideal candidate will have a strong research background in any disciplines within this broad field, awareness of the current fundamental and technological landscape, a critical eye and a keen interest in the field and its development more broadly.

The successful candidate will play a key role in determining the representation of optoelectronic technologies in our pages through the selection of manuscripts for publication and by interacting with the relevant research communities. This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position and calls for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science and technology.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in a relevant research discipline — ideally with a strong background in any areas of optoelectronics, photovoltaics or optical engineering with sensibility to the practical challenges of device and material development, but highly qualified candidates from other areas of physics or engineering with a good understanding and familiarity with optoelectronics research should not be deterred from applying.

  • A passion for science and research and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research and technological developments, both within and beyond your speciality. (Note that extensive editorial training is offered to help new editors become comfortable with handling a broad field of research.)

  • The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.

  • Excellent time-management skills in order to efficiently navigate multiple time-sensitive activities and shifting priorities.

  • Be eager to interact with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken).

The successful candidate will report to the relevant Deputy Editor, but also work closely with editorial colleagues from across the Nature teams - they will be expected to play an important role in influencing the representation of their fields in the journal as a whole. They will handle original research papers and review material: the ability to offer well-reasoned and timely editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice is crucial. They will liaise extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature family and experts in the international research community. Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with significant editorial experience are encouraged to apply and will potentially be considered for a Senior Editor position.

The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis (ideally starting in Fall 2025). The position will ideally be located in our Shanghai or Beijing offices, although requests for eventual placement in one of the other Nature editorial offices could be considered.

At Springer Nature, we’re committed to creating a great working environment, which includes the benefits you receive, opportunities for you to develop your skills and ways to get to know your colleagues. Some of these include:

  • Support networks that focus on fostering dialogue around diversity, community building, advice and advocacy

  • Wellbeing initiatives to support in maintaining a healthy work-life balance

  • 24-hour access to our learning and development platform Leap to help develop your skills

Please apply by sending your CV, covering letter (including your class of degree, a brief account of your research and other relevant experience, and details of your current salary) and a concise discussion of relevant recent scientific developments which you have found particularly exciting (explaining why).

At Springer Nature, we value the diversity of our teams and work to build an inclusive culture, where people are treated fairly and can bring their differences to work and thrive. We empower our colleagues and value their diverse perspectives as we strive to attract, nurture and develop the very best talent.
