Job Description

Saronic Technologies is seeking a Blast/Paint Technician in Franklin, Louisiana, to join their production team. This full-time, on-site role involves preparing and coating surfaces of ships, operating sandblasting and painting equipment, and performing equipment maintenance. The technician will work with various coating types and blast media, ensuring high-quality application and adherence to specifications. Collaboration with other trades and strict adherence to safety protocols are essential in this fast-paced ship production environment.
Must Have:
  • General knowledge of a variety of coating types and blast media.
  • Knowledge of conventional air-operated sprayers and airless sprayers.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow blueprints and sketches.
  • Strong aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to figure material take-offs on drawings for required material quantities.
  • Ability to use painting equipment.
  • Proficiency in sandblasting ships to clean surfaces.
  • Capability to visually inspect and prepare surfaces for coating application (masking, degreasing, containment, power tool, thinner wiping, brush and rolling, spray painting, blasting).
  • Skill in applying coatings using various methods (brush, roller, conventional spray, airless, thermal spray, specialty coating applications).
  • Ability to clean and store paint tools and equipment after use.
  • Capability to measure and mix paint in accordance with specifications.
  • Proficiency in stenciling lettering and other identifying information.
  • Ability to disassemble and clean paint and sandblasting equipment.
  • Competence in light to medium equipment repairs, including air & airless guns, sandblast valves, blast controls, sandblast hose ends, compressor fuel filter changes, and preventive maintenance.
  • Adherence to all shipyard safety policies, including proper use of PPE, fire prevention, and confined space protocols.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with other trades.
  • Commitment to and accountability for HSE results.
  • Proper storage and disposal of chemicals in accordance with policies and laws.

Job Proficiency

  • Sandblast ships, using spray gun and sandblasting equipment to clean grease, dirt, old paint, and rust from ships
  • Visually inspect surfaces prepared for coating application
  • Prepare surfaces for final coating application, through masking, degreasing, containment, power tool, thinner wiping, brush and rolling, spray painting and blasting
  • Apply coatings to surfaces by use of brush, roller, conventional spray, airless, thermal spray and other specialty coating applications
  • Clean and store paint tools and equipment after use
  • Maintain a clean and organized jobsite free from any unnecessary hazards associated with the work being performed by a paint crew.
  • Measure and mix paint in accordance with specifications
  • Perform general housekeeping and all assigned duties on a jobsite
  • Stencil lettering and other identifying information according to specifications
  • Disassembles paint and sandblasting equipment and cleans equipment, using solvent, wire brushes, and dry cloth
  • Can execute light to medium equipment repairs, including:
  • Repair of air & airless guns
  • Replace or repair sandblast valves
  • Make minor repairs on blast controls
  • Repair sandblast hose ends
  • Change fuel filter on compressor
  • Preventive maintenance and fluid level check on equipment

Culture and Collaboration

  • Follow all shipyard safety policies, including proper use of PPE, fire prevention, and confined space protocols.
  • Assist in the training and development of junior blast/paint technicians
  • Collaborate and communicate with welders, metal fitters, pipefitters, electricians, and other trades as required to complete vessel construction or repair and to maintain efficient work flows
  • Work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced ship production environment
  • Inspect all equipment daily
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area
  • Maintain a positive attitude toward customers and represent Saronic professionally
  • Make a personal commitment and be accountable for HSE results, driving toward the achievement of defined goals
  • Store and dispose of chemicals in accordance with Saronic policies and procedures and Federal, State and Local laws
