Job Description

Ethos is seeking a Business Analyst to optimize its underwriting engine. This role involves leveraging data querying and analysis to identify improvement opportunities, refine decision logic, and drive strategic underwriting initiatives. The analyst will collaborate with risk, actuarial, product, and engineering teams to design and implement new rules and data-driven processes, directly impacting customer experience and business outcomes.

Must Have:
  • Enhance and refine the logic of Ethos’ underwriting engine to improve accuracy, efficiency, and customer experience.
  • Query, analyze, and interpret large datasets to identify optimization opportunities and guide underwriting improvements.
  • Partner with risk, actuarial, product, and engineering teams to design and implement new rules, workflows, and data-driven processes.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of underwriting logic, proactively identifying gaps or issues and proposing solutions.
  • Develop and maintain processes for validating changes, testing logic updates, and ensuring high-quality system performance.
  • Translate analytical findings into actionable recommendations for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of system or data-related issues impacting underwriting.
  • 2–4 years of experience as a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, or in a related role.
  • Proficiency in querying and analyzing data (SQL or equivalent required).
  • Strong logical and analytical thinking skills.

About the role

Delivering an industry-leading underwriting experience is critical to Ethos’ mission and will continue to drive our growth and success in the life insurance industry. We are seeking a Business Analyst whose primary focus will be improving and optimizing our underwriting engine. In this role, you will leverage data querying and analysis to identify opportunities, refine decision logic, and drive strategic underwriting initiatives that directly impact our customers and business outcomes.You’ll work across teams to design, analyze, and improve systems that directly impact the customer experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Enhance and refine the logic of Ethos’ underwriting engine to improve accuracy, efficiency, and customer experience.
  • Query, analyze, and interpret large datasets to identify optimization opportunities and guide underwriting improvements.
  • Partner with risk, actuarial, product, and engineering teams to design and implement new rules, workflows, and data-driven processes.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of underwriting logic, proactively identifying gaps or issues and proposing solutions.
  • Develop and maintain processes for validating changes, testing logic updates, and ensuring high-quality system performance.
  • Translate analytical findings into actionable recommendations for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of system or data-related issues impacting underwriting.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 2–4 years of experience as a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, or in a related role.
  • Strong logical and analytical thinking skills, with a proven ability to break down complex problems.
  • Proficiency in querying and analyzing data (SQL or equivalent required).
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ownership mentality—you’re comfortable diving deep into both systems and data.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to present data-driven insights to diverse stakeholders.
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset with a passion for improving processes and outcomes.
  • Experience in the life insurance or financial services industry.
  • Familiarity with business systems configuration or implementation projects.
  • Background in quality assurance or data operations.
