We’re looking to hire a talented and enthusiastic lawyer to join a creatively led, inherently curious and passionate producer of Australian drama at an exciting time of rapid growth for the company!
As part of Sony Pictures’ global television business, this is an exciting opportunity for an experienced lawyer to work on premium Australian projects with a truly global distribution launchpad. The role comes with significant exposure to international deals (with global talent and commissioners alike) and would suit applicants with media experience and/or an enthusiastic interest in the global world of entertainment.
The role supports the Head of Legal & Business Affairs and you’ll work closely with a wonderful team of creative and business professionals within the Sony family, both in Australia and abroad (including Sony Pictures Entertainment headquarters in Los Angeles ).
Supporting the business affairs, operational and commercial functions of Curio Pictures, the role will include reviewing, drafting and negotiating a range of complex agreements in connection with the development, financing and production of television and film projects with a wide variety of stakeholders and platforms.
You’ll work across the entirety of a project’s life from rights acquisition, early script development through to commissioning, financing and distribution agreements. Production-related work will include negotiating deals and agreements for the engagement of cast, crew and suppliers, script and production clearances, music licensing, insurance and assisting location and other departments.
General work will include format and license agreements, ancillary rights agreements, co-production and professional services arrangements, advising on production financing incentives, insurance, employment and other issues, as well as maintaining a range of template agreement and policy documents, ensuring internal records are kept up to date. The role works collaboratively with Sony colleagues, both in Australia and internationally, including providing advice and support to finance and distribution teams.
The successful candidate will have:
- Qualified as a solicitor in NSW or equivalent interstate or overseas qualifications (typically circa 3-7 years post qualification experience).
- Relevant experience with a production company, television network, streaming platform or law firm.
- Superior drafting, negotiation and technical skills with the ability to work on a range of complex matters across the content development and production sphere.
- Relevant industry experience in contracting production finance and script clearance including defamation highly desirable.
- A solid grounding in contract law, with experience in intellectual property employment law, insurance and corporate governance also desirable.
- Working in an exciting and fast-paced environment to tight deadlines, excellent organizational skills, multi-tasking and attention to detail are essential.
- Initiative, with the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team player and to effectively manage internal and external relationships.
