Job Summary

Atomic Cartoons is seeking an experienced CG Lead FX Artist for an upcoming CG show in their Vancouver studio. This role involves designing and animating effects using Houdini, collaborating with lighting and CG Supervisors, and leading a team of FX Artists. Candidates should have strong technical skills, a good understanding of physical dynamics, and experience with Mantra. The position requires leadership, problem-solving abilities, and eligibility to work in Canada, with remote, hybrid, and onsite options available within British Columbia.

Must Have

  • Design and animate effects using Houdini.
  • Take direction from FX Supervisor and TDs.
  • Collaborate with lighting and CG Supervisor on technical approaches.
  • Produce look tests based on concepts.
  • Meet production deadlines and quotas.
  • Lead, teach, and guide FX Artists.
  • Ensure workflow efficiency with FX Supervisors.
  • Problem-solve with Production Coordinator.
  • Previous industry experience on episodic shows.
  • Strong Houdini Dynamic tools knowledge.
  • Good understanding of physical dynamics.
  • Self-driven, good communicator, team player.
  • Strong technical skills in show structure.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, problem-solve.
  • Experience rendering with Mantra.
  • Ability to mentor and motivate artists.
  • Comfortable with production task assignment.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Resided in BC by December 31, 2025.

Good to Have

  • Previous experience in a lead role.
  • Prior experience in the CG animation industry.
  • Basic knowledge of Nuke.
  • Basic knowledge of Renderman and/or Katana.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Design and animate effects utilizing Houdini for smoke, clouds, fire, lava, and water that meet the technical and aesthetic standards of the project.
  • Take direction from FX Supervisor and FX TDs.
  • Work with the lighting team and CG Supervisor to determine the best possible technical and creative approaches to be able to work smoothly within the pipeline.
  • Produce look tests based on the provided concepts.
  • Work within the show structure and production deadlines to complete tasks.
  • Help ensure weekly assigned quotas and expectations are met by the team.
  • Lead, teach and guide a team of FX Artists to create the assigned show style.
  • Work closely with FX Supervisors on each episode to achieve deliverables, while creating workflow efficiency.
  • Work closely with the Production Coordinator to proactively flag and problem-solve any potential issues.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Previous industry experience working in a studio environment, working on an episodic show.
  • Strong Knowledge of Houdini Dynamic tools.
  • A good understanding of physical dynamics and natural phenomena.
  • Self-driven, a good communicator, and a great team player.
  • Strong technical skills within a show structure.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and problem-solve.
  • Experience rendering with Mantra.
  • Ability to mentor, motivate, and lead by example less experienced artists, while having a great attitude!
  • Comfortable working with production on task assignment of the team.
  • Previous experience in a lead role is an asset.
  • Prior experience in the CG animation industry is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of Nuke is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of Renderman and/or Katana is an asset.
  • Currently legally eligible to work in Canada.

START DATE: February 2026

  • Applicants must have resided within BC as of December 31, 2025 and be able to provide the appropriate supporting documents.
  • All Atomic employees in this role have the opportunity to work remotely within BC, artists within Vancouver and the Lower Mainland can also choose hybrid and in-studio options.

At Atomic Cartoons and Thunderbird Entertainment, we take into consideration a wide range of compensation factors including background, skills, location, and experience to determine competitive pay. In addition to competitive pay, this position is eligible for company-sponsored benefits including medical, GRSP, vacation pay, paid holiday break, paid leave, and a variety of other discounts and perks. Please note: This expected pay range is for British Columbia and is not applicable to locations outside of the province of British Columbia.

Wage ranges are based on a weekly rate.
