Job Description

The Chief Naval Architect Engineer III provides technical leadership for the design, development, production, and testing of simulation training devices. They apply engineering knowledge and planning, foster a common vision, provide technical direction, and clarify roles. The role acts as a technical link between CAE and the customer, coordinates engineering activities, and provides expertise during evaluations of training devices. Key responsibilities include arranging technical activities, supporting program managers, determining program risks, acting as the focal point for customer technical matters, ensuring compliance with requirements, and leading presentations. The role also involves resolving problems, providing technical support, and supporting bid and proposal efforts.
Must have:
  • BS or MS Degree in engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years work experience (8 for MS)
  • Experience in maritime propulsion plants
  • Experience leading multi-disciplined engineering teams
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to develop innovative solutions
  • Ability to develop strong customer relationships
  • Experience using Computer Aided Design (CAD); especially Solidworks or CREO
  • Strong MS-Office toolset skills
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
Good to have:
  • Experience developing effective presentation materials
  • Understanding and application of Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • Schedule creation and management
  • Experience developing standards and processes for Hardware Engineering teams
  • Experience using JIRA
  • Understanding and application model-based definition and GD&T

Summary 

Provides technical leadership for the design, development, production, and test of simulation training devices. Applies mature engineering knowledge and planning. Fosters the development of a common vision, provides technical direction and priorities; clarifies roles and responsibilities within the teamActs as technical link between CAE and customer.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for arranging and directing technical activities of large-scale programs, coordinates engineering activities across many disciplines, including system definition and requirements are conveyed to the organization. 

  • Provides technical expertise during subjective and objective evaluations of training devices. 

  • Provides support for Program Managers on all technical matters and schedule performance. Determine program system risk and opportunities. Assist leadership with risk mitigation plans and implementation. 

  • Act as the focal point for all customer technical matters, including hands on solutions. 

  • Ensures that company’s simulation designs and products meet contractual requirements and all functional areas within engineering are compliant to the technical requirements for each assigned project.  

  • Authors, coordinates, and leads presentations of formal reviews with customers.  

  • Leads technical team to resolve problems and provides technical support to suppliers and manufacturing. 

  • Participate in installations and final sell off of training devices. Coordinate and review technical/operational deliverables prior to submission to customer.  

  • Budget performance responsibility for technical team using the earned value management system (EVMS). 

  • Support bid and proposal by reviewing technical specifications, recommending design and manufacturing solutions, and writing detailed technical responses. 

  • Undertakes independent studies, analysis, interpretations, and conclusions. 

  • Provides guidance to junior team members 

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements 

  • BS or MS Degree in engineering 

  • Minimum of 10 years work experience; for MS minimum of 8 years of prior work experience 

  • Experience in maritime propulsion plants building, upgrading, or serving on ships. Simulation hardware design and build or military training 

  • Experience leading multi-disciplined engineering teams 

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information to technical and non-technical audiences including peers, management and customers 

  • Proven ability to develop innovative solutions both individually and as part of a team 

  • Ability to develop strong customer relationships 

  • Experience using Computer Aided Design (CAD); especially Solidworks or CREO 

  • Strong MS-Office toolset skills 

  • Due to U.S. Government contract requirements, only U.S. citizens are eligible for this role. 

 

Preferred Skills 

  • Experience developing effective presentation materials and documentation for internal and customer-directed presentations. 

  • Understanding and application of Earned Value Management (EVM). 

  • Schedule creation and management (MS Project, Open Plan or P-6). 

  • Experience developing standards and processes for Hardware Engineering teams. 

  • Experience using JIRA. 

  • Understanding and application model-based definition and GD&T. 

  • Experience using Windchill toolset. 

 

Security Responsibilities

Shall not divulge information outside company without management approval.  All government and proprietary information will be accessed and stored electronically on company provided resources.  

  •  Incumbent must be eligible for DoD Personal Security Clearance.

Work Environment 

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. 

 

Physical Demands 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  

  • Must be able to perform normal office duties (sitting for long periods at a desk and in technical meetings) 

  • Must be able to travel CONUS and to International sites for extended periods 

  • Should be familiar with and be able to operate simulation training devices such as: full flight motion devices, maintenance training devices, entertainment devices and fixed base training devices.   

  • Should be familiar with and able to support Engineering or Operations staff on any type and sub-component of training devices. 

  • Must be able to climb stairs on a regular basis 

  • Must be willing to work overtime
