Job Description

As a CNC Machine Operator at Wabtec's Chicago location, you will be responsible for machining quality products. This entry-level role involves operating CNC mills and lathes to fabricate precision parts based on customer specifications, interpreting blueprints, using quality instruments, and recording completed work. You will contribute to revolutionizing the way the world moves for future generations.
Must Have:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • General knowledge of machining techniques and methods
  • Ability to receive and execute instructions
  • Basic machine shop skills using CNC mills, lathes, band saw, and grinders
  • Proper selection and safe use of power tools and machining equipment
  • Tool maintenance and care to ensure long-term equipment serviceability
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations using a calculator for weights, measurements, and time estimations
  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions with precision
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with colleagues and supervisors
  • Knowledge of machining a variety of materials including steel, castings, and forgings
  • Knowledge of metal properties relevant to machining and cutting
  • Knowledge of standards and guidelines from the Machinist’s Handbook
  • Knowledge of industry-standard safety protocols and practices
  • Operate company-supplied machinery, including CNC mills and lathes, to fabricate precision parts
  • Interpret and work from blueprint/drawings
  • Ability to use and interpret quality instruments
  • Record completed work to ensure accurate documentation and workflow tracking
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move items in short distances
  • Regularly required to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and squat for extended periods
  • Comfortable with exposure to shop environments including oils, coolants, moving machinery, and noise
  • Mandatory use of appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

This Chicago location provides energy management systems to the Freight Car Market; Draft Gears, Slack Adjusters, Handbrakes, Spherical Articulated Connectors, TMX/UBX Truck Mounted Brake Systems.

How will you make a difference?

As a member of the Chicago location of Wabtec, you will be responsible for machining of quality products. This is an entry level machinist position for those that are enrolled in or have completed machining coursework at an accredited Applied Technical College program.

What do we want to know about you?

What will your typical day look like?

Operate company-supplied machinery, including CNC mills and lathes, to fabricate precision parts based on customer specifications

  • Record completed work to ensure accurate documentation and workflow tracking

What about the physical demands of the job?

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and move items in short distances
  • Regularly required to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and squat for extended periods
  • Exposure to shop environments including oils, coolants, moving machinery, and noise
  • Use of appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is mandatory

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

The hourly rate for this role is in the range of $18.00-22.00 per hour.

The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location.
