Job Description

FOX Factory, a company designing and manufacturing performance products for various vehicles, is seeking a Composite Lab Operator. This role involves operating and maintaining composite lab equipment for the development, fabrication, and testing of baseball and softball bats. Responsibilities include preparing materials, fabricating composite preforms, molding samples, and collecting lab data for research, development, and quality control. The operator will assist in prototype manufacturing and analyzing high-performance composite bats. The position also includes performance testing of bats, inspecting inventory, and documenting findings for the R&D team. General duties involve maintaining lab cleanliness, managing inventory, adhering to safety protocols, and collaborating with the team.

Marucci Sports, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fox Factory, was founded by two former MLB players and their athletic trainer who began handcrafting bats for some of the best players in the game from their garage in 2004. Position Summary:

The Composite Lab Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining composite lab equipment to support the development, fabrication, and testing of baseball and softball bats. This hands-on role involves preparing materials, fabricating composite preforms, molding samples, and conducting lab data collection to aid in research, development, and quality control. The ideal candidate will contribute to innovation by assisting in prototype manufacturing and using advanced equipment to create and analyze high-performance composite bats.

Position Responsibilities:

This position will have responsibilities under two main R&D categories: composite bat prototype manufacturing, and bat (metal and composite) performance testing – both of which will be performed on-site in the Scottsdale lab.

Composite Prototype Manufacturing:

  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain the equipment used for composite material fabrication, such as pattern cutters, vacuum wrappers, table rollers, curing ovens and hydraulic molding presses.
  • Sample Preparation: Prepare composite material samples for fabrication, including cutting, molding, and conditioning materials as per established procedures. Follow precise protocols to ensure sample consistency and accuracy.

Lab Data Collection and Analysis:

  • Operate specialized industry performance testing equipment to assess product quality and performance. 
  • Inspect incoming product inventory for compliance with specifications and quality standards. 
  • Conduct detailed prototype analyses, documenting findings, and providing actionable insights to the R&D team. 

General Responsibilities:

  • Documentation: Maintain detailed notes of development efforts, results, and observations for the engineering department.
  • Lab Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace, including routine cleaning and calibration of equipment. Maintain inventory of supplies and materials, ensuring availability and proper storage.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper handling of hazardous materials. Comply with all relevant regulations and standards related to lab operations and material testing.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other lab personnel, engineers, and researchers to support various projects and initiatives. Provide technical assistance and support for ongoing experiments and material evaluations.

Specific Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required:

  • Sporting Goods, baseball or softball knowledge is preferred.
  • Computer skills – Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Ability to complete and handle detailed measuring, and ability to follow specialized lab protocols
  • Ability to maintain quality work under stressful situations, and maintain excellent attention to detail
  • Requires clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools is required.

Position Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.  

Experience:

  • Previous experience working in a lab or R&D environment a plus.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

WORKING CONDITIONS - R&D Testing Lab working environment. May involve standing for extended periods and handling heavy equipment or materials. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles and lab coats may be required for specific tasks. Exposure to potentially hazardous materials and chemicals with appropriate safety measures in place.

SAFETY HAZARDS - Manufacturing work hazards may exist.

LANGUAGE SKILLS – Ability to read and interpret documents such as contracts, ability to write reports and correspondence.  

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS – Ability to apply concepts of basic math, algebra.
