Job Description

Applied Materials is a global leader in materials engineering solutions. This role, Country Legal Head VI, involves representing the Legal department in Taiwan, assessing and mitigating legal risks, providing legal advice to executives, and identifying emerging legal and regulatory trends. Key responsibilities include managing commercial transactions, drafting and negotiating contracts, supporting trade compliance, and handling litigation and intellectual property matters. The position requires extensive experience in legal practice within a multinational high-tech environment, strong management skills, and fluency in Chinese and English.
Must Have:
  • Represent Legal department as a member of the Taiwan Executive Leadership Team.
  • Assess legal risks affecting AMT and advise on mitigating risks.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to AMT’s country president, executives, and employees.
  • Identify emerging legal and regulatory risks and trends.
  • Partner with cross-functional colleagues to shape policy and regulatory framework and ensure compliance.
  • Provide day-to-day legal support to operations (procurement, real estate, environmental health and safety, logistics & quality).
  • Manage and provide legal support for commercial transactions, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts.
  • Provide legal advice and prepare or review labor or HR related agreements.
  • Support trade compliance matters and manage litigation, arbitration, and other disputes.
  • Provide guidance on intellectual property matters.
  • Manage and support subsidiary governance.
  • Proactively and strategically manage outside counsel and legal expenses.
  • Establish and manage administrative processes (e.g., Contract Lifecycle Management systems).
  • 15+ years of work experience in multinational law firms or in-house legal departments in High Tech. industry, semiconductor preferred.
  • Holds a bachelor or master degree in law; JD degree preferred; with Taiwan bar admission or US bar admission.
  • Extensive knowledge of Taiwan legal legislation, framework, and practice.
  • Fluency in oral and written Chinese and English – including legal and business terms.
  • Excellent people and project management skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Represent the Legal department as a member of the Taiwan Executive Leadership Team, assessing legal risks affecting AMT as well as advising and supporting the organization in mitigating risks.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to AMT’s country president, executives and other employees.
  • Identify emerging legal and regulatory risks and trends to proactively advise/influence strategic decision-making.
  • Serve as key point of contact to AMT leadership and management team for all AMT legal matters.
  • Partner with cross-functional colleagues to shape policy and regulatory framework and drive the continued analysis of laws to ensure alignment with compliance policies and procedures.
  • Provide day-to-day legal support to operations of various functions, including procurement, real estate, environmental health and safety, logistics & quality.
  • Manage and provide legal support for various commercial transactions, including hardware, software and service sales. Draft, review and negotiate various commercial contracts and documents.
  • Provide legal advice and prepare or review labor or HR related agreements or documents.
  • Support trade compliance matters as well as manage litigation, arbitration and other disputes, in collaboration with subject matter experts and cross-functional colleagues.
  • Provide guidance on intellectual property matters.
  • Manage and support subsidiary governance, establishment and consolidations.
  • Proactively and strategically manage outside counsel and legal expenses.
  • Establish and manage administrative processes in a timely and efficient manner. (Contract Lifecycle Management systems, approval databases, etc.)

Qualification

  • Highly adept at working effectively and collaboratively in a heavily matrixed organization.
  • Ability to partner closely with business clients to achieve results and resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Able to communicate and present issues and proposals in a clear, concise and direct manner.
  • Strong emotional intelligence (EQ) with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization and customer base.
  • Experienced and proficient at drafting & negotiating a wide variety of contracts and working with business teams to close deals.
  • Strong sense of teamwork, accountability, ownership and mentorship.
  • Excellent people and project management skills.
  • Passionate about making an impact through strategy, process improvement and change management.
  • Fluency in oral and written Chinese and English – including legal and business terms.
  • Can-do attitude, sense of humor and willingness to learn.

Education and Experience

  • Holds a bachelor or master degree in law from a recognized university; JD degree will be preferred; with Taiwan bar admission or US bar admission
  • Work experiences (15+ years) in multinational law firms / Top Taiwan Law firms / in-house legal departments of multinational corporations in High Tech. industry, semiconductor preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of Taiwan legal legislation, framework and practice.
  • Application of Taiwan legal skills in a multinational, in-house environment.
  • General experience in commercial contracts (including drafting, redlining and negotiating) litigation/arbitration, IP issues and management of business risks.

Travel: Occasional travel within Taiwan among offices in Hsin-Chu, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung and to Company's California head office
