Job Summary
Zapier is seeking an Engineering Manager - Growth Personalization to lead the Personalization Platform team within the Growth Engineering organization. This role involves leading engineers in building, scaling, and maintaining Zapier's personalization infrastructure to power contextual experiences across the product. The team's mission is to enable data-driven product experiences, enhance user engagement through personalized recommendations, and build a foundation for tailored experiences at scale. Collaboration with Data, Product, and other cross-functional teams is crucial to ensure a robust, scalable platform aligned with user activation and retention goals.
Must Have
- 3+ years managing teams focused on personalization, experimentation, or growth platforms
- Deep technical expertise in modern web technologies and personalization ecosystems
- Hands-on experience with TypeScript, Python, Node.js, GraphQL, and Next.js
- Understanding of personalization strategies, user segmentation, ML model integration, and data-driven product development
- Ability to define technical strategy for the Personalization Platform
- Lead technical execution, including system design, architecture, and operational excellence
- Own development of self-service tools for A/B tests and personalized experiences
- Partner with Data org to implement recommendation engines and user context APIs
- Build and maintain high-throughput, low-latency systems for personalized content
- Coach and mentor engineering team members
- Participate in code reviews and spread technical knowledge
- Actively recruit, onboard, and train new engineers

About You
- You're an experienced engineering leader with 3+ years managing teams focused on personalization, experimentation, or growth platforms. You thrive in fast-paced, data-driven environments and can navigate ambiguity while priorities evolve.
- You bring deep technical expertise in modern web technologies and personalization ecosystems, including recommendation engines, A/B testing platforms, feature flagging, and real-time data pipelines.
- You have hands-on experience with our core tech stack: TypeScript, Python, Node.js, GraphQL, and Next.js. You've shipped production code and can contribute to technical discussions, code reviews, and architecture decisions.
- You understand personalization strategies, user segmentation, ML model integration, and data-driven product development.
- You're a strong collaborator who builds alignment between Engineering, Data, and Product teams. Your communication skills help you balance technical debt with business needs while building trust across stakeholders.
- You embrace change and see system migrations and organizational shifts as opportunities to build a more capable platform. You can lead your team through ambiguity while maintaining focus on outcomes.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, effectively conveying technical concepts to diverse audiences and keeping leadership informed through clear, actionable updates.
Things You'll Do
- Define the technical strategy for the Personalization Platform, collaborating with stakeholders across Data, Product, and Growth teams to align technical solutions with business goals.
- Lead technical execution, including system design, architecture, and operational excellence, to ensure reliability and scalability of personalization and experimentation infrastructure.
- Own the development of self-service tools that enable product teams to design, deploy, and analyze their own A/B tests and personalized experiences without engineering bottlenecks.
- Partner closely with the Data org to implement recommendation engines and user context APIs that drive front-end personalization across the logged-in member homepage, onboarding survey, and embedded experiences throughout the product.
- Build and maintain high-throughput, low-latency systems that deliver personalized content and recommendations in real-time using technologies like Algolia, GraphQL, and edge computing.
- Stay on top of personalization and experimentation trends and innovations, ensuring Zapier remains competitive in its approach to user engagement and growth.
- Develop effective ways to communicate, monitor, and lead your team through weekly one-on-one's and team meetings.
- Build rapport with each member of your Engineering Team and support them through coaching and mentorship to help level up their skills, and performance management when necessary.
- Participate in code reviews, learning and spreading technical knowledge throughout Zapier - moving knowledge to documentation where appropriate.
- Maintain a focus on our customers by using customer feedback and data insights to guide your team through tradeoffs. You'll help your team understand when to be rigid on quality and how to be flexible and creative with scope.
- Actively recruit, onboard, and train new engineers at Zapier, as well as supporting the continuous improvement of hiring practices in Engineering.
- Create documentation and training resources to help teams effectively utilize the personalization platform and drive adoption across the organization.
