Job Description

The OpenAI Search team is reimagining the search experience for the AI era, working across research, engineering, product, and design to integrate real-time information into ChatGPT and our API. We are seeking an experienced engineering leader to guide our product infrastructure team, focusing on making search fast and reliable while building strong foundations for rapid and safe innovation. This role involves crafting strategy, building a world-class team, and enabling strong execution.
Must Have:
  • Hire and manage a diverse, high-performing engineering team

  • 10+ years of experience in engineering, including 5+ years in engineering management

The base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. If the role is non-exempt, overtime pay will be provided consistent with applicable laws. In addition to the salary range listed above, total compensation also includes generous equity, performance-related bonus(es) for eligible employees, and the following benefits.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced engineering leader to guide our product infrastructure team. As part of this, your team will make search fast and reliable, while building strong foundations that enable the team to innovate quickly and safely.

We’re looking for an experienced engineering leader who can go deep to help us craft the right strategy, build a world-class team, and enable strong execution.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Hire and manage a diverse, high-performing engineering team
  • Evolve our search systems to deliver speed and reliability to our users, collaborating with teams ranging from research to infrastructure to product and enabling step-change improvements
  • Coach engineers to maximize their impact and growth
  • Create an inclusive culture that makes all feel welcome while enabling radical candor and the challenging of groupthink

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 10+ years of experience in engineering, including 5+ years of experience in engineering management
  • Have a passion for building and evolving large-scale distributed systems to be fast, reliable, and maintainable
  • Are comfortable with ambiguity and rapid change, and eager to get deep into the weeds to help solve problems
  • Have a strong track record of coaching engineers to achieve their peak potential
  • Feel a voracious and intrinsic desire to learn and fill in missing skills—and an equally strong talent for sharing learnings clearly and concisely with others
  • Have experience attracting and hiring top talent for highly competitive technical roles, and can effectively communicate a vision that resonates with candidates
