Job Description

The Equipment Engineer 1 at Illumina provides expertise, service, and support to the San Diego headquarters by maintaining equipment at world-class levels in a fast-paced regulated environment. The role involves supporting day-to-day manufacturing equipment maintenance operations, owning components of a system with oversight, and working in a dynamic team-oriented environment to support multiple operations and technologies. Responsibilities include learning new instruments, developing maintenance programs, collaborating with engineers and technicians on failure reduction, installing new equipment, working with vendors, data mining, understanding internal instrument communication, creating innovative solutions, handling chemicals, performing basic computer repair, working with lasers and microfluidics. The position requires advanced electronics troubleshooting, component-level failure analysis, computer troubleshooting, effective communication, quick learning, instrument performance improvement, hands-on troubleshooting, familiarity with lab practices, lasers, optics, electronics, PLC, and sourcing instrument components.
Must have:

The Equipment Engineer is part of the equipment engineering team who provides expertise, service, and support to San Diego Illumina headquarters by maintaining equipment at world class levels in a fast-paced regulated environment and providing high level reliability exceeding Illumina’s dynamic development and manufacturing demands.  The Equipment Engineer 1 will support the day-to-day manufacturing equipment maintenance operations by owning components of a system, with oversight. This individual will work in a dynamic team-oriented environment that supports multiple operations and technologies helping Illumina deliver its highly complex product pipeline in a reliable and sustainable manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Learn and understand new instruments to sustain maintenance programs, providing reliable equipment availability
  • Work with engineers and maintenance technicians to develop and implement procedures to reduce or eliminate sources of systematic equipment failures
  • Install new equipment or assist in the construction of new instruments
  • Work with vendors to improve support for manufacturing instruments
  • Data-mining large datasets to identify sources of systematic error
  • Understand basic internal instrument communication (RS232, PLC, IO)
  • Create innovative solutions to technical problems
  • Safely handle dangerous chemicals
  • Perform basic computer repair functions
  • Work with lasers and laser alignment
  • Work with microfluidic systems

Requirements:

  • Advanced electronics trouble-shooting including reading of schematics
  • Ability to learn and understand component level failures in large instruments
  • Computer trouble-shooting and repair (preferred experience with Microsoft Windows)
  • Ability to communicate and document equipment issues
  • Ability to learn new tasks quickly
  • Demonstrate continuous improved performance of instruments and ability to communicate these improvements to process and R&D engineers
  • Optimistic when faced with setbacks
  • Demonstrate experience with hands on troubleshooting
  • Excellent familiarity with standard laboratory practices
  • High level of familiarity with lasers, laser-optics, electro-optics, electronics or related technical field required
  • Experience with PLC
  • Experience sourcing instrument components from non-OEM suppliers
  • Knowledge and skills typically acquired through previous positions in fast-paced corporate environments which involved responsibility for similar work
  • Travel up to 10%

Experience/Education:

  • 2+ years of related experience with a bachelor’s degree; or equivalent work experience

The estimated base salary range for the Equipment Engineer 1 role based in the United States of America is: $61,700 - $92,500. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
