Job Description

THALES is seeking a passionate and driven Field Service Engineer to deploy, set to work, and provide in-service support for Sonar systems on Royal Navy and export customers' Ships/Submarines. Based in Devonport, the role requires occasional travel across the UK and overseas. Responsibilities include defect rectification, maintenance, commissioning, and reporting, ensuring compliance with health and safety and export control regulations.
Must have:
  • Be responsible for the Health and Safety of all Thales activities, complying with Risk Assessments, COSHH Assessments, and Safe systems of work.
  • Support Royal Navy and Export Platforms in Defect Rectification, including Fault diagnosis, testing, and acceptance trials in harbour and at sea.
  • Provide On-Call telephone support to customers (once at a suitable level of knowledge).
  • Write site visit reports.
  • Conduct Pre-Upkeep Maintenance Assessment (PUMA) inspections.
  • Conduct scheduled maintenance activities.
  • Conduct setting to work / commissioning activities to bring RN platforms out of refit.
  • Escalate engineering issues to the Field Services Manager or Service Delivery Manager as required.
  • Write post maintenance reports.
  • Provide weekly reports to the Service Delivery Manager, detailing activities, upcoming tasks, successes, challenges, opportunities, and support required.
  • Identify personal and professional development.
  • Comply with all export control rules and regulations, including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
  • Perform additional ad-hoc duties consistent with the nature of this position.
  • Possess a Full UK car driving licence.
  • Demonstrable experience in conducting installations and or support engineering, preferably in a maritime environment.
  • Able to use a range of IT tools.
  • Able to use a range of generic test equipment.
  • A track record of performing in a relevant engineering discipline, preferably dealing with Complex Systems (Electrical, Electronic and Hydraulic).
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (less than 10%) across the UK and occasionally overseas.
  • Capable of fault finding, resolving issues and problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels in the spoken and written word.
  • High level of self-motivation and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance (requires UK residency for the last 5 years, or minimum 3 years with additional overseas checks).

THALES are looking to recruit a passionate & driven Field Service Engineer to be responsible for the deployment, setting to work and in service support of Sonar systems deployed on Royal Navy and export customers Ships / Submarines.

The role is based at Devonport, but the nature of supporting the RN can mean a requirement to travel, sometimes at short notice – both across the UK and occasionally overseas – which the successful candidate would be expected to support.

What will you deliver?

  • Be responsible for the Health and Safety of all Thales activities carried out by you and comply with the following:

  • Support to both Royal Navy and Export Platforms in Defect Rectification:

  • Write site visit reports.
  • Support to both Royal Navy and Export Platforms Maintenance Periods / Refits:
  • Conduct Pre-Upkeep Maintenance Assessment (PUMA) inspections.
  • Conduct scheduled maintenance activities
  • Conduct setting to work / commissioning activities to bring RN platforms out of refit
  • Escalate engineering issues to the Field Services Manager or Service Delivery Manager as required.

  • Activities undertaken.

  • Identify any support required from the project or department.

  • You will also perform additional ad-hoc duties that will arise from time to time that are consistent with the nature of this position.

Who are we looking for?

The ideal successful candidate will have;

  • Full UK car driving licence

  • Someone who is willing to travel occasionally to meet the Royal Navy (less than 10%)
  • You must be capable of fault finding, resolving issues and problems You will have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels in the spoken and written word.
  • Your experience will demonstrate your high level of self-motivation and the ability to work under pressure are vital.

This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance.  Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.

To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years.  In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
