Job Description
This Intellectual Property Engineer role at Valeo involves comprehensive IP protection, including selecting appropriate protection types (Patent, Design, Copyright), drafting and prosecuting filings, and managing the patent portfolio. The engineer will also be responsible for preventing and defending against third-party actions through competitor patent studies, infringement risk assessments, patent clearances, and involvement in oppositions and litigations. Additionally, the role includes initiating infringement actions against third parties, reviewing IP clauses in agreements, and providing IP training to R&D teams, ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, and security procedures.
Must Have:
- Select appropriate IP protection types (Patent, Design, Copyright).
- Draft and prosecute IP filings.
- Manage patent portfolio.
- Conduct project studies for competitor patents and reorient projects to avoid infringement.
- Perform patent clearances and IP rights validity studies.
- Contribute to oppositions/nullity suits against third-party patents.
- Study and follow up on infringement claims and litigations.
- Detect infringements and check validity of Valeo patents.
- Initiate offensive pre-litigation or litigation actions.
- Review and propose modifications to IP clauses in agreements.
- Provide IP training to R&D/R&I teams.
- Apply Environment Safety and Security procedures and good practices.

IP protection
- Selection of the most appropriate type of protection (Patent, Design, Copyright, …) and best way to proceed
- Definition of the creation/inventions, preparation of the filings (drafting or subcontracting), filings, prosecutions
- Participation to the decisions regarding foreign filings,
- Definition of product coverage strategy with R&D/Projects
- Patent portfolio management
Preventing or defending from third parties actions
- Project studies in view of identified competitor patents
- Action for reorienting any project in case of infringement risk
- Patent clearances and IP Rights validity studies based on one or cluster of families and including risk assessment
- Contributions to Oppositions / Nullity suits against patents granted to third parties
- Study and follow-up of infringement claims and litigations
Infringement actions against third parties (on the basis of Valeo patents)
- Infringement detection and validity check of the files
- Offensive pre-litigation or litigation actions, in liaison with IP, Division Managements and other involved functions and according to Group rules
Support to other functions
- Reviewing of IP clauses in agreements, Proposition of modifications in agreements
- IP training for R&D/R&I teams
Applying the Environment Safety and Security procedures and good practices; know for their activities and the activities of subcontractors the potential risks and their consequences. Be attentive and responsive to them and manage the associated action plans.
