Job Summary

Job Description

This internship, located in Moirans, France, within Thales AVS's Innovation team, focuses on developing a deep learning model for medical image processing in X-ray tomography. The main objective is to enhance 3D image quality by correcting artifacts caused by scattered X-ray photons using AI. The intern will review literature, develop and train an AI solution (e.g., U-Net), compare it with existing methods, and analyze the impact of training datasets to improve generalization capabilities.
Must have:
  • Familiarize yourself with scanner images, Thales datasets, and X-ray photon scattering artifacts.
  • Conduct a literature review to understand existing artifact correction methods.
  • Develop an artificial intelligence solution (neural networks, U-Net architectures, etc.), then train and test models on available data.
  • Compare results with existing algorithms by evaluating image quality, generalization capability, and computation times.
  • Analyze the impact of the training dataset to design a representative dataset: identify determining variables (BMI, sex, observed organ, etc.), detect potential biases or defects, and evaluate the models' generalization capacity.
Good to have:
  • Experience with convolutional neural network architectures, especially U-Net.
  • Notions of data set processing and preprocessing.
  • Good command of English, especially for reading scientific articles.
Perks:
  • Our technological expertise
  • Our attention to employee balance
  • An inclusive and benevolent environment
  • Recognized societal and environmental commitment (Thales Solidarity, CAC 40 ESG index…)
  • All our internships are subject to an allowance, the amount of which is determined according to your level of study.

Our commitments, your benefits

  • Our technological expertise
  • Our attention to employee balance
  • An inclusive and benevolent environment
  • Recognized societal and environmental commitment (Thales Solidarity, CAC 40 ESG index…)

Your daily life

Come discover the Moirans site, a human-sized site with a beautiful environment. Coming to work in Moirans means: a friendly and warm atmosphere, interesting engineering projects, mountains nearby.

CONTEXT:

You will carry out this internship within the Innovation team of Thales AVS in Moirans, near Grenoble, specializing in X-ray detectors for medical imaging. It is part of the development of a new generation of tomographic scanners.

The objective is to improve the quality of 3D images by correcting artifacts related to scattered X-ray photons, using an approach based on artificial intelligence.

Your mission will consist of developing an artificial intelligence model dedicated to correcting these artifacts, then comparing it to existing methods. This is a concrete internship at the interface between R&D, AI, and the medical field.

YOUR MISSIONS ARE:

On a daily basis, you will join the Innovation team and work in conjunction with experts in image processing, artificial intelligence, and X-ray physics.

  • Familiarize yourself with images from scanners and with Thales datasets, as well as with artifacts related to X-ray photon scattering.
  • Conduct a literature review to understand existing artifact correction methods.
  • Develop an artificial intelligence solution (neural networks, U-Net architectures, etc.), then train and test models on available data.
  • Compare your results with existing algorithms by evaluating image quality, generalization capability, and computation times.
  • Analyze the impact of the training dataset to design a representative dataset: identify determining variables (BMI, sex, observed organ, etc.), detect potential biases or defects, and evaluate the models' generalization capacity.

Throughout the internship, the team will support you while giving you the freedom to explore your ideas. Questioning approaches and rigorous documentation of your future work will, however, be encouraged.

YOUR PROFILE:

Do you have the ambition to develop new skills within a large international group?

Do you want to discover a rich and varied profession?

Are analysis, autonomy, proactivity, and teamwork recognized strengths of yours?

Are you preparing a BAC+5 in computer science, engineering, AI, or Data Science and looking for a final year internship?

You have knowledge in:

  • You master machine learning libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch or equivalents).
  • You master Python.
  • You demonstrate a rigorous work methodology.
  • You have solid knowledge in artificial intelligence and a good understanding of issues related to training datasets.

It would be a plus if you had knowledge in:

  • You have experience with convolutional neural network architectures, especially U-Net.
  • You have notions of data set processing and preprocessing.
  • You have a good command of English, especially for reading scientific articles.

Then this position is for you!

A word from the team:

"You will join a team of experts who will guide you well in implementing your subject. This internship offers you the opportunity to work on a recent and essential subject in the field of X-ray imaging: AI-based scattered radiation correction, and to very concretely develop an artificial intelligence approach which, if it proves superior to existing methods, will be integrated into the product."

All our internships are subject to an allowance, the amount of which is determined according to your level of study.
