Job Description

As a Machine Operator in Chicago, you will program, set up, and operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines to fabricate metallic components. Responsibilities include reading blueprints, adjusting offsets, changing tooling, and qualifying first article parts. You will prioritize work based on safety, quality, and productivity, and perform duties without close supervision. The role requires accuracy, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to troubleshoot machine programs, contributing to the production requirements across various work cells.
Must have:
  • Program, set up, and operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines.
  • Fabricate metallic components made from castings, forgings, and stamped steel materials.
  • Program, read blueprints/CAD drawings, adjust offsets, change inserts, change out jobs with appropriate tooling, set-up and qualify first article parts.
  • Support production requirements for all work cells.
  • Prioritize daily work based on Safety, Quality and Productivity requirements.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors or enter commands for computerized machine control media.
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjust as required.
  • Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications and drawings.
  • Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed data.
  • Verify dimensions and alignment of assembly through the use of calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, and indicators.
  • Install machined replacement parts in machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit.
  • Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
  • Develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
  • Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, maintenance, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Update inventory systems for usage and scrap and prepare Material Tags for non-conforming parts.
  • Design and build tools to efficiently manufacture products.
  • Follow all Company personnel policies and process procedures.
  • Routinely lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Stand for extended periods.
  • Perform basic reaching, crouching, bending.
  • Wear safety glasses, ear plugs, steel-toe shoes with metatarsals, and a face shield.
Good to have:
  • Ability to MIG weld.

How will you make a difference?

As a member of the Chicago location of Wabtec, you will be responsible for programming, setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic components made from castings, forgings, and stamped steel materials. This is a Monday through Thursday day shift role with overtime sometimes required on a Friday and/or Saturday. The CNC Machinist is expected to be able to program, read blueprints/CAD drawings, adjust offsets and change inserts, change out jobs with appropriate tooling, set-up and qualify first article parts. Supports the production requirements for all work cells. Prioritizes daily work based on Safety, Quality and Productivity requirements.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • This position requires accuracy and responsibility as many duties must be performed without close supervision
  • Training and/or experience using measuring equipment and reading drawings is needed.
  • Minimum 1 year experience with conventional machine tools.

What will your typical day look like?

Capable of running small conventional machine tools (drill press, grinder, kick press, tumbler.) per instructions.

Capable of measuring parts utilizing micrometers, calipers, depth gages, height gage, etc.

Have the ability to routinely lift up to 40 pounds

Be able to stand for extended periods

Basic reaching, crouching, bending

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Ability to make or modify tooling and/or fixturing in order to machine part.
  • Strategic and creative thinking to analyze issues that may arise and create solutions.
  • Ability to write, edit, and troubleshoot programs at the machine control.
  • Possess a mechanical aptitude; ability to use a large variety of hand tools and basic knowledge of power tools, such as grinders, dynafiles, and other deburring, grinding, or sanding equipment.
  • Ability to MIG weld, preferred.
  • Ability to respond positively to feedback and implement change in process and procedures as needed.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level interpersonal skills to work effectively with others to meet production demands
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to roll up one's sleeves to get the job done
  • Skilled at working effectively with cross functional teams in a matrix organization
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and a formal ERP system (Oracle, SAP, etc), or ability to learn new computer software programs, such as Oracle

What will your typical day look like?

  • Always has safety first in mind when working at Cardwell, uses all personal protective equipment as required. Ensures all equipment and forklifts are functioning per design and function. Shutdown equipment and stops operations in unsafe conditions, lockout/tagout when necessary.
  • Completes Red Flag Condition cards for urgent remedies to safety concerns and completes work orders to ensure timely repairs to equipment.
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, and grinders.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine or machine’s program as required.
  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications and drawings.
  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed data.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly through the use of calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, and indicators to verify dimensions to print.
  • Installs machined replacement parts in machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
  • Develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
  • Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, maintenance, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems. Works with Material
  • Preparation and Finishing Departments as needed.
  • Updates inventory systems for usage and scrap and prepares Material Tags for non-conforming parts.
  • Designs and builds tools to efficiently manufacture products
  • Follows all Company personnel policies and process procedures.
