Job Summary
Synechron is seeking a skilled Mainframe Developer to join our innovative technology team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing mainframe applications integral to our business operations. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, leverage your technical expertise, and stay current with emerging technologies to deliver reliable and efficient mainframe solutions that support our organizational goals. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to large-scale projects, optimize existing systems, and introduce improved processes within a dynamic, forward-thinking environment.
Software Requirements
- Required:
- Experience with mainframe technologies such as COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, and IMS.
- Familiarity with modern integration tools and middleware.
- Knowledge of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies.
- Working proficiency in version control and collaboration tools such as Git, JIRA, and Confluence.
- Preferred:
- Exposure to cloud integration and hybrid cloud environments.
- Basic understanding of mobile, IoT, blockchain, or cloud platforms.
- Experience with automation scripting or modern software tools compatible with mainframe environments.
Overall Responsibilities
- Collaborate with business teams and cross-functional stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements.
- Design, develop, test, and implement mainframe-based software solutions aligned with business needs.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, including specifications, user guides, and system diagrams.
- Conduct thorough code reviews to ensure high standards of quality, performance, and maintainability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, providing timely support and solutions.
- Participate actively in Agile ceremonies, including daily stand-ups, planning, and retrospectives.
- Stay informed of emerging technology trends and evaluate their applicability to enhance existing systems.
- Mentor junior team members and promote best practices for mainframe development.
Technical Skills (By Category)
- Programming Languages:
- Required: COBOL, JCL, PL/I, Assembler.
- Preferred: Java, Python, Node.js (for integration and modernization efforts).
- Databases/Data Management:
- Required: DB2, VSAM.
- Preferred: Oracle, SQL Server, other relational/NoSQL databases.
- Cloud Technologies:
- Preferred: Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud for hybrid deployment and integrations.
- Frameworks and Libraries:
- Experience with middleware such as CICS, MQ Series, WebSphere.
- Familiarity with RESTful APIs and service-oriented architectures.
- Development Tools & Methodologies:
- Proven experience with Agile, Scrum, Git, JIRA, Confluence.

- Security Protocols:
- Basic understanding of security standards relevant to mainframe applications (e.g., RACF, ACF2).
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in mainframe application development or modernization.
- Proven track record of designing and implementing complex mainframe solutions.
- Experience with agile methodologies, version control, and collaborative software tools.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams, including testing and operations.
- Industry experience in financial services, insurance, or enterprise data environments is a plus but not mandatory.
Day-to-Day Activities
- Participate in daily stand-up meetings to coordinate activities and report progress.
- Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical design specifications.
- Develop, test, and deploy mainframe applications to meet project timelines.
- Conduct code reviews and provide feedback to peers to ensure best practices.
- Collaborate with QA and testing teams to validate functionality and performance.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and escalate unresolved problems.
- Document technical solutions and update system workflows.
- Engage in continuous learning to adopt new tools, platforms, and industry standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Relevant professional certifications (e.g., IBM Certified Application Developer, mainframe-specific certifications) are preferred.
- Up-to-date knowledge of mainframe systems, modernization techniques, and relevant compliance standards.
