- Develop and qualify metallic material allowables and process specifications for marine and aerospace structures
- Lead corrosion prevention and protection initiatives, including protective coatings, anodizing, passivation, sealants, and cathodic protection methods
- Define and validate welding and joining processes (fusion welding, friction stir welding, brazing, mechanical fastening) for structural metals
- Support test programs to evaluate fatigue, fracture toughness, and corrosion performance of metallic alloys.
- Provide guidance on marine environment durability of alloys, coatings, and assemblies
- Interface with suppliers and test labs to ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g., ASTM, AWS, MIL-STD, ISO, DNV)
- Troubleshoot metallurgical issues including weld defects, corrosion failures, and material non-conformance
- Document and maintain metallic material property databases, process specifications, and qualification records
- Support certification efforts by generating technical justification and substantiation packages for materials and processes
- Document and maintain material property databases, ensuring traceability and alignment with regulatory requirements
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action for process and material non-conformances
- Lead or support continuous improvement activities that inform design-for-cost and design-for-manufacturing activities
- Collaborate with certification teams to provide technical justification and documentation for material allowables used in structural substantiation
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- 2+ years of experience in aerospace and/or marine metallic materials and processes development
- Knowledge of corrosion science, coatings, and protective systems for marine and aerospace environments
- Hands-on experience with welding and joining processes, weld procedure qualification, and NDI methods
- Familiarity with structural alloys (aluminum, titanium, steels, nickel alloys) and their corrosion and fatigue behaviors
- Experience interpreting and applying standards (ASTM, AWS D1.1/D17.1, MIL-STD, SAE, ISO, DNV, etc.)
- Strong analytical skills for evaluating material performance data
- Excellent communication skills, with ability to produce clear technical documentation and specifications
