Job Description

The Open Connect Network Engineering group at Netflix seeks a motivated L4 Network Engineer. Responsibilities include handling well-defined tasks, troubleshooting operational problems, participating in on-call rotation, collaborating with cross-functional teams, supporting deployments, configuring equipment, and contributing to projects improving network resiliency, observability, monitoring, and automation. The role involves working with external partners and contributing to a scalable and reliable global network. Experience in network engineering, understanding of live streaming infrastructure, familiarity with multi-vendor WANs (Arista, Cisco, Juniper), IP routing (BGP), and internet ecosystem are required.

The Open Connect team’s mission is to provide a high quality video streaming experience for our customers at a continually declining cost. The Open Connect Network Engineering group is focused on engineering and operation of the Open Connect Global backbone and egress connectivity to partners that is integral to our streaming service and also underpins the networking needs of our employees and content creators worldwide.

Level 4 Network Engineer

The Open Connect Network Engineering group is seeking a motivated L4 Network Engineer to join our team. 

As an L4 Network Engineer, you will focus on well-defined tasks and troubleshooting moderate operational problems remotely. You will participate in an on-call rotation supporting the global network. You will collaborate with many cross functional teams/network stakeholders and contribute to projects, support deployments (remotely), and configure equipment. You will need to demonstrate a high level of curiosity and willingness to learn to be successful in this role.

We are looking for candidates who exhibit the following characteristics:

A highly communicative individual who will:

  • Take on defined tasks and problems within projects, driving short-term goals.

  • Participate in the on-call rotation to support network reliability and performance.

  • Independently handle well-defined tasks contributing to medium to larger efforts that drive project goals.

  • Address simple to moderate operational problems in the technical domain without escalation.

  • Assist in operating, maintaining, and upgrading the Open Connect network infrastructure deployed in 90+ locations worldwide.

  • Collaborate with team members and vendors to support our global network growth, ensuring a high level of Quality of Experience (QoE) for Netflix users.

  • Participate in efforts to improve network resiliency, observability, monitoring, and automation, contributing to a scalable and reliable global network.

  • Work with external partners, carriers, data center providers, and hardware vendors to assist in network management and troubleshooting.

  • Support the Network Architecture team in implementing and operationalizing network designs.

  • Collaborate with the Network Tools team to enhance automation processes, improving accuracy and efficiency in daily activities.

  • Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills for effective documentation and collaboration.

  • Demonstrate curiosity and a willingness to learn by seeking guidance and clarification from colleagues when needed.

Your skills and experience should include:

  • Professional experience in network engineering or a related field (experience in the media/content delivery space is a plus).

  • Basic understanding of Live Streaming infrastructure and operations.

  • Familiarity with multi-vendor wide area networks (Arista, Cisco, Juniper).

  • Solid understanding of IP routing, particularly BGP.

  • Solid understanding of the internet ecosystem, including interconnection, peering, and transit concepts.

  • Exposure to MPLS, QoS, and DWDM (nice to have) technologies.

  • Familiarity with network automation. Basic experience in a scripting language or programming.

  • Ability to execute changes within the team’s systems, including creating and updating alerts, dashboards, runbooks, and assisting with developing, testing, and deploying software.

  • Demonstrates good judgment by taking a collaborative approach to engineering, participating in cross functional working groups, and mapping requirements to solutions.

  • Communicates work status, impact, and progress to the team, learning to measure impact and progress.

  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with immediate team peers and cross-functional project teams.

  • Understands and applies Netflix's core values, holding themselves and others accountable, and is comfortable speaking up when they have a different opinion.

This position includes rotating on-call assignment and occasional travel (quarterly offsites at Netflix offices / industry relevant conferences)

Our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $100,000 - $720,000.

We also offer paid leave of absence programs.  Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off.
