Job Description

The Packaging Technologist is responsible for pack design and specification for products supplied regionally. This includes working with sites, procurement, suppliers, and pack change managers, covering design activities for new product introductions (NPIs), product transfers, validation, and market requests. The role involves technical leadership, troubleshooting packaging-related issues, and ensuring a robust process to deliver high-quality products. Responsibilities also include defining packaging component specifications, conducting trials, reporting data, and maintaining packaging design information, including generating technical specifications and drawings. The role also involves defining critical process parameters and ensuring proper mitigation of risks. The incumbent is responsible for Packaging Process Validation, generating the plan, preparing the protocol and executing process validation for new products, assessing the need for revalidation, analysis and report.
Must have:
  • Expertise in packaging materials and processes.
  • Experience with GMP requirements at manufacturing site
  • Knowledge of packaging equipment and plant.
  • Tertiary qualifications in science or engineering.

Job Purpose:

The packaging technologist is responsible for pack design and specification service for products supplied regionally. This is achieved by interfacing with sites, procurement, suppliers, pack change managers and covers design activities associated with NPIs, product transfers, validation, market requests, and site changes ( including procurement driven changes to the supply base).

Additionally, for KL site’s products, to ensure technical inputs yield a robust process thereby delivering the highest quality product in a safe manner assuring a product that delights our customers including but not limited to people capability development, formulation, starting materials, packaging components, equipment, process and testing.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Be the packaging subject matter expert or ‘go to’ packaging person. Provide expertise on product packaging material, conversion process, printing technique and emerging technology

2. Provide technical leadership or technical advice   

  • Lead and or / be part of a multi-disciplinary or cross functional team for engineering to technical troubleshoot, root cause analyse, investigation and resolve packaging related product issues at the site, support product complaint investigations and packaging related deviations
  • Provide guidance, coaching and technical knowledge to site team. During routine gemba in operations, highlight to the Technical Services Lead on any plant management issues, process which may have a potential impact to product quality or supply
  • Work with suppliers to define individual packaging component specification and define packaging functional testing to confirm design suitability ( component interaction, distribution , performance)

3. Conduct packaging process understanding or trial as needed,

  • Perform Design of experiment (DOE) on new packaging material specifications to understand the optimal working parameters.
  • Apply detailed stastistical analysis to forecast trends to deliver a robust packaging process and continuous improvement proposals and reduce the cost of waste.
  • Perform packaging trial as needed, manage packaging material used in the trial exercise per the governing SOP
  • Provide packing technical support for machine line trial to qualify packaging platform/ system based on Haleon standards and requirement

4. Responsible for accurate and timely reporting, maintenance of data in the sustainability and value engineering live tracker,or others as entrusted.

5. Ownership and maintenance of data related to packaging design including creation of technical specifications and drawings and developing packaging component standards

6. During lifecycle management of the product,

  • Define critical process parameters (CPP) and Critical Quality Attributes (CQA), document the Product Control Strategy (PCS) and work with operations management to ensure the PCS is embedded in batch instructions and SOP
  • Ensure that if any risk is identified, it is properly mitigated prior to the execution of the Process Qualification ( Stage 2 of PQ).
  • Responsible for Packaging Process Validation : generating the plan,prepare the protocol and execute process validation for new products, assess the need for revalidation, analysis and report.
  • Demonstrates First Line Leader behaviours. Supports and drives Zero accident culture in the shopfloor by promoting EHS behaviour, support ergonomic or process safety improvements by implementing mitigations in manufacturing, cleaning activities that possess safety risks.

Qualification:

  • Tertiary qualifications in science or related such as engineering, technical discipline
  • Preferably with Institute of packaging diploma or packaging specialization
  • Requires  specialist knowledge in packaging process, components, specifications, packaging equipment and plant.  Has experience working with manufacturing sites. Requires thorough appreciation of validation principles, EHS and regulatory ( Pack compendia, ICH) requirements

Minimum related experience:

  • Experience in related packaging function
  • Has knowledge of GMP requirements at manufacturing site and  experience in technical, product ownership, product lifecycle management
  • Demonstrates First Line Leader behaviours
  • 2 years working experience
  • Troubleshooting, process and packaging improvement
