Principal Game Engineer

SYBO is part of the Miniclip family and known for the widely popular game, Subway Surfers - the most downloaded mobile game in the world, with over four billion downloads. Located in the heart of Copenhagen, we aim to create playful moments that inspire our fans to care.

Think of yourself as the guardian of our game’s codebase - not with a rusty lock and key, but with modern tools, thoughtful architecture, and plenty of foresight. We believe in building strong, smart technical solutions that keep our games healthy for the long run, and you'll be the guardian who battles off pesky performance invaders.

This role goes beyond writing great code. You’ll help evolve the foundations our game runs on, mentor curious and talented engineers, and partner with our technical leadership to keep our architecture ready for the future. You’ll drive performance, scalability, and maintainability so we can keep delivering experiences that entertain and impress players year after year. And yes, you’ll be our friendly neighbourhood “code health” champion - cape optional.

The Principal Game Engineer on our unannounced game will report into the Technical Director.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and uphold the technical architecture of the game, anticipating upcoming opportunities and risks
  • Bring in-depth technical knowledge of key technologies, tools and processes (e.g. rendering pipelines, backend services, gameplay systems, networking, platform integrations)
  • Collaborate on the architecture and technical design of new features or proposals to improve our code base
  • Lead efforts in performance profiling and optimization for both engine-level and gameplay systems
  • Ensure a maintainable, testable and well-documented codebase
  • Participate in planning and execution of work, including requirements gathering, technical discovery, technical design, breakdown and estimations
  • Design and implement core foundational systems using cutting-edge technology where appropriate for a sustainable project that can live for the upcoming challenges
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other technical colleagues

Within 3 months, you’ll have a strong grasp of the code, the right patterns to follow, and the context to make significant architectural decisions. You’ll already be influencing the technical direction of major features.

By 12 months, you’ll be the go-to person for planning, designing and maintaining our architecture. You’ll own key initiatives like a full QA automation system, champion code health, and lead at least one major project to uplift our codebase.
