Focus of the Role
As a Quality Engineer – Test Automation, you thrive on working with your team to execute on the overall Software testing strategy, helping Telstra to simplify our IT systems, strengthen business resilience and ultimately maximise the value we deliver to our customers. You will be engaged to design and optimise testing opportunities within a variety of workstreams and functional areas across the enterprise. Your continuous learning and improvement mindset and collaboration skills are critical to success in this role, as you continue to build your knowledge and expertise in more complex test environments.
What You’ll Do
- Product & Technology - Software Engineering & IT develops and maintains Telstra's software and IT systems, working on some really cutting-edge technologies.
- Build next-level test automation suites for UI, APIs, and backend services that integrate seamlessly into CI/CD pipelines.
- Drive shift-left testing, ensuring bugs are caught before they become production nightmares for all of us.
- Be a test strategist & automation pro—optimize frameworks, scale test coverage, and make testing faster and smarter across Telstra.
- Work side-by-side with developers to bake quality into every stage of the software lifecycle—testing isn’t a final step, it’s part of our Telstra journey!
- Work with developers to design for testability and enable faster feedback loops across application and process.
- Analyze test results, provide data-driven insights, and continuously improve automation strategies to developers.
- Stay ahead of the curve by researching and experimenting with cutting-edge testing tools and techniques and implement which suites Telstra’s quality need.
About You
- You have a burning desire to automate everything, always looking for ways to eliminate manual effort and optimize processes through code—because if it can be automated, it should be!
- 3 to 7 years of strong working experience in Software Automation Testing.
- Hands-on experience in automation testing (Java, Playwright, Selenium, API testing, Appium) and writing test scripts that actually make a difference in cost and performance.
- A problem-solver who loves debugging, troubleshooting, and making things work better, faster, and smarter.
- A Continuous learner, eager to grow and make an impact
- Experience in TDD, BDD, and CI/CD pipelines—we test early, we test often!
- Passion for mentoring developers, helping them write testable, high-quality code at earlier stage.
- Strong understanding of databases, SQL, and performance testing (JMeter, Gatling or Locust).
- Familiarity with DevOps, cloud platforms (Azure mostly), and test automation in cloud labs like BrowserStack, Lambda etc.
- Experience working in an Agile setup and collaborating with cross-functional teams empowering developers and other stack holders on test first approach.
- A mindset that thrives on continuous learning, innovation, and improvement.
- Stay on top of emerging tech, introducing innovative testing approaches to make quality engineering smarter across Telstra.
What’ll Give You Bonus Points
- You’ve run workshops or training to help teams improve their testing game.
- You’ve worked in telecom (OSS/BSS)
- You know a thing or two about security testing, mobile automation, or contract testing and comfortable talking about those and get hands dirty when needed.
- You’ve dabbled in AI-driven test automation (or are super keen to learn).
- Experience in performance and load testing at scale.
