The Australian Financial Review is the nation's premier business and politics publication, renowned for its incisive, independent and agenda-setting journalism. The Financial Review believes an innovative and entrepreneurial business community is critical to Australia’s future prosperity in an increasingly connected world. Our focus is Australia but our mindset is global; we are as committed to covering the corporate and political stories that will shape the new economy as we are to reporting on the establishment. Financial Review readers want to make up their own minds, which means our editorial mission is to be impartial, informative and accountable. The Financial Review is home to Australia's top journalists, all of whom work tirelessly to produce trusted, timely and engaging content with a focus on digital audiences and contemporary forms of storytelling.

Job Description

We are looking for a Brisbane-based journalist who will report on Queensland's political and economic issues for a national audience. You will be part of the Financial Review’s national team, which covers politics, policy, economics and human-interest stories for a business-focused audience.

Day to day you will:

  • Jump enthusiastically on breaking news and file to tight deadlines.
  • Generate unique story ideas to lead the news agenda and cover a broad range of political, economic and social issues.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, balanced, timely reports that conform to Financial Review style.
  • Work ethically and maintain high standards of independence, accuracy and quality.
  • Write articles which offer context and analysis of major news or issues, as required.
  • Be proactive about the visual presentation of stories, including by commissioning accompanying photography and graphics.
  • Maintain and expand a network of reliable, authoritative contacts.

Qualifications

What you'll bring:

  • Previous experience as a reporter, or experience in business or politics combined with very strong writing skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Queensland politics, the main players and the key issues for Queensland's business community.
  • Evidence of solid editorial judgement – from nailing an angle to pitching your own stories.
  • A passion for news and current affairs, as well as business and economics.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills, including an ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Very strong writing skills across news, features and other formats.
  • Experience working as a team player, preferably in a newsroom environment.
  • Ability to deliver sophisticated analysis of major news and issues.
  • Experience in digital article production – including writing headlines and write-offs, image selection and search engine optimisation – or a willingness to learn.
