The International Desk seeks a talented reporter-researcher for its Madrid bureau to support regional work, including interviews, research, and translation. This role contributes to diverse coverage like politics, culture, and international relations, assisting with breaking news and investigations. The ideal candidate is organized, communicative, thrives under pressure, and possesses curiosity, skepticism, attention to detail, accuracy, and clear English writing skills. This full-time position reports to the bureau chief.
Must have:
  • Find, contact, arrange, and conduct interviews with sources.
  • Compile and translate clear, accurate research memos quickly.
  • Collaborate with bureau chief, correspondents, and editors on news research.
  • Provide translation to correspondents and editors as needed.
  • Identify, research, and contribute to news and enterprise stories.
  • Suggest story ideas and themes to improve audience engagement.
  • Assist reporters in the field.
  • Monitor current events in local media and provide updates.
  • Contribute to Live coverage when required.
  • Cover news accurately and efficiently across all media.
  • Maintain and cultivate news sources and contacts.
  • Obtain, read, and analyze corporate, legal, and government filings.
  • Assist with bureau administration, including managing equipment and tools.
  • Arrange safe travel for correspondents, including flights, drivers, lodging, and currency.
  • Assist correspondents in obtaining visas and travel permits.
  • Maintain emergency checklist and fire safety equipment in the bureau.
  • Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and commitment to mission.
  • Possess curiosity, skepticism, attention to detail, and accuracy.
  • Write clearly and concisely in English.

The International Desk is looking for a talented and versatile reporter-researcher to join our Madrid bureau and support the work we produce in the region. You will help with fixing, organizing and translating interviews, researching themes, and sourcing.

You will contribute to coverage of politics, culture, climate change, security, migration, and international relations, among other topics, and you may be asked to help with breaking news, enterprise, investigations and innovative story forms. Curiosity, skepticism, attention to detail and accuracy are a must, as is an ability to write clearly and concisely in English. This is a full-time, paid position based in Madrid, reporting to the bureau chief.

Main responsibilities:

  • Find, contact and arrange or conduct interviews with sources and compiling and translating clear and accurate research memos, quickly.
  • Work closely with the bureau, chief, correspondents and editors to research news stories as directed.
  • Provide translation to correspondents and editors as needed
  • Work closely with correspondents and editors to identify, research and contribute to news and enterprise stories, as well as suggest story ideas and themes that will improve audience engagement and grow our readership in the region
  • Assist reporters in the field
  • Monitor current events across local media, especially in news, and provide updates and briefings for our correspondents and editors
  • Contribute to Live coverage when needed
  • Cover news accurately and efficiently, for any and all media; maintaining and cultivating news sources and contacts
  • Obtain, read and analyze corporate legal and government filings and reports
  • Assist with the administration of the bureau, where required including:
  • Obtaining and managing newsroom equipment and tools, including office supplies, safety equipment and communication tools such as cell phones.
  • Arranging safe travel for correspondents, obtaining flights, drivers, lodging and local currency, often at the last minute, often to difficult-to-reach places.
  • Assisting correspondents in obtaining visas and travel permits.
  • Maintaining the emergency checklist and the fire safety prevention and safety equipment in the bureau.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Ideal candidate:

  • Must be fluent in English and Spanish, written and spoken, with the ability to translate accurately between the two languages
  • Knowledge of the politics and culture of Spain and the surrounding regions
  • Meticulous organizational skills; ability to prioritize with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • A strong, demonstrable passion for journalism
  • Shows initiative and independence; identifies and tackles tasks that need completion, without instruction
  • A good collaborator and receptive to feedback
  • Ability to deal with all levels of management, staff and sources in a highly professional manner
  • Professional judgment with respect to confidentiality is a must
  • An appreciation of The Times’s culture, writing style and commitment to journalistic standards and ethics
