Job Summary
Sonar is seeking a Research Engineer to advance AI applications in software engineering. This role involves conducting cutting-edge research, developing novel algorithms, and creating software tools to enhance system performance, reliability, and flexibility. The Research Scientist will contribute to AI products, enabling developers to innovate more effectively. Responsibilities include applied research in AI/ML for software engineering, designing and implementing prototypes, collaborating with cross-functional teams, staying updated on AI/ML and software engineering advancements, publishing research findings, and participating in code reviews. The ideal candidate will help fix issues at the source for all code, whether developer-written, AI-generated, or from third parties, improving code quality and security.
Must Have
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- At least 3 years of experience as a Research Engineer or Research fellow
- Strong research background in AI, ML, and SE
- Experience with generative AI technologies (e.g. GPT-4, BedRock)
- Experience developing tools/frameworks using AI/ML for software development
- Python and R development experience
- Understanding of software development processes
- Familiarity with AI/ML for code generation, program synthesis, or software testing
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills
Good to Have
- Experience in developing and prototyping in Python and R
- Excellent debugging, optimization, communication, and teamwork skills

Job Description
What You Will Do Daily:
- Conduct applied research in integrating AI/ML techniques with software engineering practices to improve code quality, testing, and software maintenance.
- Design and implement experimental prototypes to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of new methodologies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including AI researchers, software engineers, and product managers, to translate research findings into practical applications.
- Stay informed about the latest advancements in AI/ML and software engineering to identify emerging trends and opportunities for innovation.
- Publish research findings in leading academic conferences and journals, and present innovative work to the broader research community.
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to other developers/researchers.
- Implement best practices from DevOps to maintain a readable codebase, testable infrastructure and documented research artifacts.
The Experience You Will Need:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- At least 3 years of experience as a Research Engineer or Research fellow in Software Engineering.
- Strong research background in AI, ML, and SE
- Experience working with generative AI technologies (e.g. GPT-4, BedRock)
- Experience in developing tools or frameworks that utilize AI/ML to enhance software development processes.
- Experience in developing and prototyping in Python and R
- Understanding of software development processes and terminology.
- Familiarity with techniques for automated code generation, program synthesis, or software testing using AI/ML
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Excellent communication skills for conveying complex technical concepts
- Excellent debugging, optimization skills, communication and teamwork skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
