Job Description

The Unix Team is responsible for the administration and support of operating systems like UNIX and Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Sun Solaris). This System Engineer role involves leading the administration and management of Unix OS instances, directly attached storage infrastructure, and supporting virtualization, containers, and clustering. The role also includes managing hardware types such as Oracle SPARC and HP Blade Infrastructure, handling incidents, changes, and configurations within SLAs, and participating in projects and disaster recovery efforts.
Must have:
  • Manage incidents, changes, configurations within agreed SLA/OLA.
  • Document systems in UNIX knowledge base.
  • Participate in Project and Disaster recovery.
  • Communicate with stakeholders on progress.
  • Adhere to procedures and capture metrics.
  • Perform assigned custodian roles.
  • Work 24x7 service shifts.
  • Provide Saturday shift and on-call support.
  • Identify service improvement opportunities.
  • Be a quick learner and understand root causes.
  • Work with minimum supervision.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Maintain good stakeholder relationships.
  • Prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Adhere to internal controls and standards.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Proficiency in RedHat Linux (v6, 7, 8).
  • Proficiency in Oracle Solaris 10 and 11.
  • Experience with Logical Domain / Zones.
  • Experience with HP UX/AIX.
  • Experience with Veritas Cluster and storage foundation.
  • Proficiency in VMware.
  • SAN experience on RedHat and Solaris (HDS/HP).
  • Proficiency in Shell scripting (bash).

Role Profile

The Unix Team is responsible for the administration and support of the operating systems installed on all infrastructures and technologies that use UNIX and Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Sun Solaris). System engineer role is expected to take a lead role in administering and managing all Unix OS instances, directly attached storage infrastructure, supporting virtualization, containers and clustering. Hardware types managed by the team are Oracle SPARC and HP Blade Infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Need to manage incidents, changes, configurations within the agreed SLA and OLAs. Ensure systems are documented in UNIX knowledge base (wiki) to an appropriate standard. Will also need to involve in Project and Disaster recovery.
  • On going communications with stakeholders including third parties, regarding incidents, changes and other tasks and their progress. These must be both timely and accurate.
  • Will need to ensure that accepted procedures are adhered to and metrics are captured.
  • On going communications with change raisers, management, technicians including third parties, regarding change requests and their progress.
  • Perform custodian roles assigned by the tower lead
  • Must work in the assigned shift in providing 24x7 service
  • Has to take part in Saturday shift and on-call support during the weekends as per the rota
  • Identify and action on the opportunities for service improvement and service level targets.

Educational qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
