Zoox is seeking a Senior Vehicle Homologation Engineer to join its pioneering autonomous vehicle fleet development. This role involves ensuring compliance with State vehicle codes and autonomous vehicle permit requirements. The engineer will collaborate with various teams, including hardware, feature, policy, and legal, to develop solutions for State AV permit needs. Responsibilities include identifying and resolving conflicts between vehicle codes and robotaxi design, assessing homologation requirements for Zoox-owned vehicles, and supporting teams with FMVSS, EPA, CARB, and FCC compliance. The position also requires tracking homologation testing, analyzing documentation, reviewing engineering changes, and supporting issue resolution during vehicle launches and quality audits for FMVSS compliance.

As a homologation engineer, you will gain exposure to every part of the vehicle and how it works. You will have the opportunity to be part of a team that is homologating ground-up autonomous vehicles. Achieving this goal requires continuous problem-solving and creativity to navigate the regulations at both a federal and state level. This role will be on-site in Foster City, California and you will be joining a high-performing, lean team.
In this role, you will:
- Lead the delivery of State vehicle code compliance and State autonomous vehicle permit requirements
- Collaborate with the hardware, feature, policy, and legal teams to deliver solutions to support State AV permit requirements
- Identify State vehicle codes that may conflict with the robotaxi design and work with the Policy team to drive updates to the vehicle code
- Lead the assessment of homologation requirements for non-robotaxi Zoox-owned vehicles. Support the teams with developing solutions, as needed.
- Support the other homologation team members on FMVSS, EPA, CARB, and FCC delivery.
- Track homologation testing and progress toward milestones
- Analyze homologation documentation for sufficiency, accuracy, and completeness
- Review and identify engineering changes with potential homologation impact. Approve change requests for HW and SW on behalf of homologation
- Support issue resolution during vehicle launch
- Review Quality Audits for FMVSS compliance concerns
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, or a related field of study
- At minimum 10 years of experience in vehicle homologation, testing or design and release
- Understanding of automotive regulations, especially State Vehicle Code, FMVSS and EPA/CARB
- Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle system components and functions
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to develop effective solutions efficiently
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently
Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $182,000 to $229,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
