Software Engineer, Principal 1 (Java)

As a Principal 1 Software Engineer, you will architect, design, and develop features for OpenEdge Development Tools, focusing on performance, usability, and AI integration. This role involves technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, user-centric solutions, ensuring quality through automated testing and adherence to Agile practices.

Must Have

• Architect, design, and develop features related to OpenEdge Development Tools.
• Lead the evolution of development features, enhancing performance, usability, and diagnostic capabilities.
• Drive the integration of AI-powered features within the OpenEdge Developer Tools ecosystem.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the development team.
• Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Architects, QA, and UX teams.
• Analyze and optimize performance issues using profiling tools and diagnostic frameworks.
• Ensure quality and maintainability through automated testing, code reviews, and continuous integration pipelines.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
• 8+ years of professional experience in a product development organization.
• Proficient in Java.
• Proven experience in developing VS Code extensions or Eclipse plugins.
• Solid understanding of Language Server Protocol (LSP) and Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP).
• Strong foundation in web development, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, RESTful services, and modern front-end frameworks.
• Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, object-oriented design, and software architecture principles.
• Strong knowledge of database concepts, query optimization, and performance tuning.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and version control systems such as Git.
• Expertise in profiling, diagnostics, and memory performance optimization on the JVM or similar platforms.
• Comfortable working on both Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate within cross-functional teams.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Commitment to Agile practices and methodologies.

Good to Have

• Understanding of RAG, MCP (related to AI integration).
• Openness to learn and adopt other relevant technologies such as JavaScript and TypeScript.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar.
• Familiarity with Node.js and modern JavaScript frameworks used in IDE tooling or developer platforms.
• Awareness of software security best practices and ability to identify, assess, and mitigate vulnerabilities (e.g., OWASP Top 10, dependency scanning, secure coding standards).
• Experience applying static and dynamic analysis tools to ensure code and dependency security.

• Stay current with emerging technologies in IDE tooling, AI-assisted development, and performance optimization.
• Adhere to Agile practices and methodologies, actively participating in all Agile ceremonies.

Your background:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent is required.
