Job Summary

Illumina is seeking a Software Engineer Trainee (Bioinformatics) to join Agile scrum teams. This role involves designing, implementing, and testing instrument software or Bioinformatics analysis pipelines for DNA sequencing and genotyping devices. The trainee will participate in all agile development aspects, develop software applications, create and execute tests, troubleshoot defects, and contribute to design and code reviews. Ideal candidates are currently enrolled in a relevant undergraduate, master's, or PhD program with experience in object-oriented programming, particularly Python, and a solid understanding of programming fundamentals.

Must Have

  • Work in Agile scrum teams to design, implement, and test software/pipeline.
  • Participate in agile development process.
  • Develop software applications for Illumina’s instruments or Bioinformatics analysis pipeline.
  • Create and execute unit tests.
  • Create and execute manual/automated tests.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software defects.
  • Contribute to software design and code reviews.
  • Currently enrolled in relevant undergraduate, master’s, or PhD program.
  • Experience in object-oriented programming (Python preferred).
  • Solid understanding of programming fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms.

Good to Have

  • Understanding design patterns.
  • Experience in extracurricular activities such as hackathon, open source projects.
  • Passion for technology.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of Agile scrum teams to design, implement, and test the instrument software or Bioinformatics analysis pipeline that powers our industry-leading DNA sequencing and genotyping devices
  • Participate in all aspects of our agile development process, from sprint planning to daily scrum meetings and sprint demos
  • Develop software applications for Illumina’s instruments or Bioinformatics analysis pipeline
  • Create and execute unit tests to verify functionality
  • Create and execute manual/automated tests
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software defects
  • Contribute to software design reviews and code reviews
  • Learn and have fun!

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, master’s or PhD program, ideally in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Bioinformatics, or Engineering
  • Experience in object-oriented programming language; Python preferred
  • Solid understanding of programming fundamentals such as object-oriented programming, data structures, and algorithms
  • Understanding design patterns is a plus
  • Experience in extracurricular activities such as hackathon, open source projects is a big plus
  • Passion for technology
