Job Description

The SSW Manager – CoE is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, governance, and operational excellence of the Safety Centre of Expertise. This role ensures the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies, standards, and practices across the organization. The manager collaborates with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of safety, compliance, and risk mitigation, while driving innovation and best practices in workplace safety. Key responsibilities include leading the Centre of Excellence, shaping its strategy, defining common delivery practices, and leading a team of safety specialists to ensure quality and consistency in practices and standards.
Must have:
  • Oversee strategic direction, governance, and operational excellence of the Safety Centre of Expertise.
  • Ensure development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies, standards, and practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of safety, compliance, and risk mitigation.
  • Drive innovation and best practices in workplace safety.
  • Lead the Centre of Excellence (COE) to service SSW and more broadly across Telstra.
  • Take accountability and lead the delivery and achievement of CoE outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the SSW Leadership team to align the strategic vision.
  • Directly shape the CoE strategy and roadmap, prioritising, sequencing and driving the achievement of an integrated plan.
  • Define Telstra’s common delivery practices, frameworks and toolsets.
  • Product ownership of Telstra’s system of work tooling.
  • Lead a team of safety specialists who have expertise in internal consulting, problem definition, solution design, implementation, operations and optimization of delivery excellence.
  • Promote quality and consistency of practices and standards.
  • Establish and lead assurance of the maturity and improvement of our common practices across Telstra.
  • Lead the continuous improvement and maturity of effectiveness of our practices across organization.
  • Lead delivery of CoE outcomes within SSW.
  • Lead extensive cross-functional collaboration to drive prioritisation of the CoE backlog.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Contribute to the creation of learning materials in collaboration with SSW Learning.
  • Provide expert guidance and support to business units on safety-related matters.
  • Lead and drive continuous improvement efforts for CoE and broader SSW teams.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement in safety practices and performance.
  • Lead training and development programs to enhance safety awareness and competencies.
  • Collaborate with external regulatory bodies and industry groups.
  • Act to champion the ways of working mindsets and practices for all teams.
  • Manage CoE FTW resource allocation with the relevant SSW Leads.
  • Provide clarity on performance and behavioural goals and expectations to your CoE.
  • Relevant diploma or tertiary qualifications with broad experience as a HSWE specialist/advisor or risk specialist.
  • Experience operating in Agile CoE’s or contributing to their success.
  • Strong leadership, people management, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in project management.
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously and meet timelines.
  • Proven experience working with agile structures or in other similar roles.
  • Experience shaping ideas and delivering initiatives successfully.
  • Strong communications background and demonstrate strategic and technical communications planning capabilities.

  • The SSW Manager – CoE collaborates with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of safety, compliance, and risk mitigation, while driving innovation and best practices in workplace safety.

Important note: the role will be a FULL-TIME capacity and will be in a HYBRID setup.

What You’ll Do

You lead the Centre of Excellence (COE) to service SSW and more broadly across Telstra. This is how you bring the purpose of your role to life:

  • Take accountability and lead the delivery and achievement of CoE outcomes by significantly contributing to agreed work and priorities.
  • Collaborate with the SSW Leadership team to align the strategic vision and inspire CoE members with a realistic but ambitious vision
  • Directly shape the CoE strategy and roadmap, prioritising, sequencing and driving the achievement of an integrated plan
  • Define Telstra’s common delivery practices, frameworks and toolsets
  • Product ownership of Telstra’s system of work tooling, and responsible for the creation, curation and delivery of best-in-class improvement tools, practices, and platforms that support and enable ways of working.
  • Lead a team of safety specialists who have expertise in internal consulting, problem definition, solution design, implementation, operations and optimization of delivery excellence.
  • Promote quality and consistency of practices and standards, ensuring teams adopts industry best practice tools and methodologies
  • Establish and lead assurance of the maturity and improvement of our common practices across Telstra
  • Lead the continuous improvement and maturity of effectiveness of our practices across organization, consolidating feedback and lessons learnt.

You also use your deep subject-matter expertise across the Delivery domain and strong business acumen to deliver against the following responsibilities:

  • Lead delivery of CoE outcomes within SSW
  • Lead extensive cross-functional collaboration to drive prioritisation of the CoE backlog, to deliver on strategic mission outcomes that maximise business value.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Contribute to the creation of learning materials in collaboration with SSW Learning
  • Provide expert guidance and support to business units on safety-related matters.
  • Lead and drive continuous improvement efforts for CoE and broader SSW teams by engaging with internal and external stakeholders to determine avenues that deliver business value.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement in safety practices and performance.
  • Lead training and development programs to enhance safety awareness and competencies.
  • Collaborate with external regulatory bodies and industry groups to stay abreast of safety trends and regulations.
  • Act to champion the ways of working mindsets and practices for all teams in which you participate.
  • Manage CoE FTW resource allocation with the relevant SSW Leads, including recruitment and/or selection to ensure capability requirements are met with the best talent, and any resourcing issues are mitigated
  • Provide clarity on performance and behavioural goals and expectations to your CoE, to ensure that their contributions are aligned to CoE priorities

About You

  • Relevant diploma or tertiary qualifications with broad experience as a HSWE specialist/advisor or risk specialist.
  • Experience operating in Agile CoE’s or contributing to their success.
  • Strong leadership, people management, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficiency in project management.
