Job Summary
We’re hiring a Staff Software Engineer – Full‑Stack (Web) to guide the technical direction of Venmo’s web products. You’ll work across the stack—React and Next.js on the front end, Node.js and Python services on the back end—delivering features for both consumers and merchants. You'll act as a project leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers, determining technical tasks, and improving existing structures and processes. It involves making technical decisions, collaborating with management to set standards, and representing the company to external partners.

- Proactively improves existing structures & processes
- Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems
- Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions
- Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor
- Trusted to represent PayPal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations
Expected Qualifications:
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

What You’ll Do
- Build, test, and ship web features for Pay with Venmo and Business Profiles using TypeScript, React, and Next.js.
- Design and maintain backend services (Node.js, Python, GraphQL) that power those experiences.
- Champion performance and accessibility; measure what matters and keep our pages fast for every user.
- Help modernize our stackmoving to server‑side rendering with React Server Components, rolling out edge caching, and tightening DevOps pipelines.
- Set clear engineering standards around testing, observability, and incident response.
- Pair with product, design, compliance, and data teams to turn fuzzy ideas into shipped features.
- Mentor other engineers through code reviews, design sessions, and thoughtful feedback.
- Explore ways AI can improve both the developer workflow (AI‑pairing, code generation) and the end‑user experience (personalized offers, smarter search).
What We’re Looking For
- 8+ years building production web applications, with at least 2 years at senior or staff level.
- Deep knowledge of modern React (hooks, context, Suspense) and TypeScript.
- Experience designing or evolving backend APIsREST and GraphQLand the services behind them.
- A track record of raising the technical bar: introducing better architecture patterns, automated tests, and code‑review culture.
- Familiarity with build and deploy tooling (Webpack/Vite, CI/CD, containerization, cloud services).
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and explaining trade‑offs in plain language to both technical and non‑technical partners.
- An inclusive mindsetyou help teammates grow and make decisions that serve a diverse user base.
Nice to Have
- Payments, risk, or fintech domain experience.
- Prior work on design systems or component libraries.
- Exposure to edge computing or serverless architectures (Cloudflare Workers, AWS Lambda).
- Contributions to open‑source projects, conference talks, or technical writing.
