Job Description

This Staff Software Engineer role focuses on NodeOS, Google's customized Linux-based operating system. Responsibilities include leading the analysis and evolution of the Node execution model for cloud enhancement, developing core NodeOS capabilities (including open-source and Google-specific components), designing and implementing large-scale systems, improving performance and parallelism through system refactoring, and enhancing testing and monitoring infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in software development (C/C++), system software, Linux development, and a proven track record in leading technical projects and teams. This role is critical to Google's infrastructure and will have a significant company-wide impact.

Must have:

8+ years software development (C/C++)
5+ years testing & launching software
3+ years software design & architecture
3+ years infrastructure/OS development
Linux development experience
Lead development & extension of NodeOS

Good to have:

Master's/PhD in CS or related field
Technical leadership experience
Experience in complex organizations
Concurrency, multithreading, distributed systems
Experience as a Technical Lead

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
8 years of experience in software development including but not limited to C or C++, and experience with data structures/algorithms.
5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
3 years of experience developing infrastructure systems, system software, or operating systems.
Experience with Linux development.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
Experience in concurrency, multithreading and synchronization, or distributed systems programming.
Experience as a Technical Lead.

In this role, you will be responsible for critical parts of the operating system running all services at Google. You will work with both upstream Linux packages, as well as home-brew Google solutions. Your place in the core infrastructure team allows your work to have a tremendous impact on the entire company and make Google engineers operational toil much smaller.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership in analyzing, auditing, and evolving the overall Node execution model at the OS level to be able to drive build out of a Cloud-empowering Node.
Lead the development and extension of cornerstone NodeOS capabilities, including engineering into open-source aspects, Google-specific daemons, and the Linux Kernel.
Analyze, design, implement, automate rollouts, and troubleshoot large-scale computer systems.
Redesign and refactor existing systems to improve performance and parallelism.
Improve existing and create new integration and canary tests, monitoring, and metrics.
