Ookla is seeking an experienced Technical Product Manager to lead the development and optimization of a new wireless network performance validation, troubleshooting, and monitoring solution. This role involves defining technical requirements, collaborating with product management and engineering teams, and ensuring effective implementation of workflows to meet end-user needs. The Technical Product Manager will provide deep technical expertise to support strategic initiatives, product execution, market launch, and lifecycle management. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in telecommunications, particularly ISP operations, and a strong understanding of tools, processes, and business models used by service providers. This position offers an opportunity to significantly impact a new business expansion by leveraging Ookla's technology and global reach, aiming to enhance troubleshooting efficiency, reduce operational costs, and improve end-user experience through advanced connectivity intelligence.
Must have:
  • Translate product vision into detailed technical requirements
  • Define network performance validation and troubleshooting use cases
  • Experience with Wi-Fi 6/6E/7, spectrum analysis, interference detection
  • Knowledge of network testing tools and RF measurements
  • Understanding of ISP field operations and workflow automation
  • Familiarity with cloud and edge computing for network analytics
  • Knowledge of TR-069, TR-369 (USP), and network management protocols
  • Analyze market trends and competitive landscape

ROLE SUMMARY 

We are seeking an experienced results-driven and technically skilled Technical Product Manager to drive the development and optimization of a new wireless network performance validation, troubleshooting, and monitoring solution combining a software app, cloud intelligence, and a portable network measurement device. 

 

The Technical Product Manager will focus on defining technical requirements, collaborating closely with product management and engineering teams, and ensuring we are building the right solution and the workflows are implemented effectively meeting the end user technical requirements. This role will work alongside the Product Director, supporting strategic initiatives by providing deep technical subject-matter expertise and ensuring smooth product execution, market launch and lifecycle management of the new solution. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to put their stamp on a new business expansion initiative which leverages Ookla’s technology and global breadth. 

 

The ideal candidate will have deep experience in telecommunications, particularly in ISP operations, and a strong understanding of the tools, processes, and business models used by service providers. You will work closely with engineering, sales, marketing, and customers to develop a market-leading product that enhances troubleshooting efficiency, reduces operational costs, and improves the end-user experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Execution & Product Requirements:
    • Translate high-level product vision and roadmap into detailed technical product requirements
    • Define network performance validation and troubleshooting use cases and workflows for wireless and wired networks based on real-world user challenges and how those challenges should be resolved
    • Create and maintain comprehensive product documentation, including user stories and specifications to guide development
    • Work closely with the development teams to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and make trade-off decisions for a high-quality product
    • Gather feedback from stakeholders and end-users to refine and adjust product priorities and features, ensuring it meets evolving needs
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to align everyone with the product roadmap and requirements. Keep stakeholders informed about project progress and changes throughout the development cycle
    • Act as the go-to person for all product-related inquiries, serving as the solution "expert”
    • Ensure AI-driven network diagnostics and performance insights are effectively implemented
  • Subject matter expertise in the following areas:
  • Wi-Fi 6/6E and Wi-Fi 7 Technologies – Deep understanding of modern Wi-Fi standards, spectrum analysis, interference detection, and optimization techniques
  • Network Performance & Troubleshooting Tools – Experience with handheld and cloud-based network testing solutions, RF measurements, and packet analysis
  • ISP Field Operations & Workflow Automation – Knowledge of how field technicians diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve connectivity issues in ISP environments
  • Cloud and Edge Computing for Network Analytics – Familiarity with cloud-based remote diagnostics, machine learning for fault prediction, and data integration with NOCs
  • TR-069, TR-369 (USP), and Network Management Protocols – Understanding of protocols used by ISPs for CPE management, remote diagnostics, and automated troubleshooting.
  • Market and Competitive Analysis:
    • Constantly analyze competitive landscape in primary and adjacent markets, identify competitory movements, risks, and provide portfolio recommendations 
    • Research common network performance and connectivity issues faced by ISP technicians, IT admins & engineers, and service providers
    • Identify opportunities to enhance the usability, accuracy, and effectiveness of network performance validation and troubleshooting tools
    • Work with customers and field teams to refine product-market fit based on real-world feedback
    • Monitor industry trends in enterprise connectivity, security, and smart buildings
  • Technical Collaboration & Implementation:
    • Define and optimize Speedtest and quality of experience data collection, and wireless and wired network diagnostic capabilities for performance validation and troubleshooting
    • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure effective implementation of network measurement algorithms and cloud analytics solution
    • Support hardware development efforts by specifying software-driven functionalities and integrations
    • Provide technical guidance to ensure seamless integration between all the components in the solution
  • Go-to-Market & Launch:
    • Work with the customer support, marketing, and sales teams to drive product adoption, ensure proper training, and communicate value to customers
    • Assist in defining customer onboarding workflows, ensuring users can effectively use the solution
    • Support early adopter programs and gather feedback from initial deployments to improve product usability for a mature solution
    • Monitor service analytics and  performance post-launch and adjust marketing and delivery tactics as needed

  • Metrics & Performance Management:
    • Define and track key success metrics, including service adoption, diagnostic accuracy, and customer feedback.
    • Report on product performance, highlighting areas for improvement and growth opportunities.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Act as the technical bridge between engineering, customer support, marketing, and product leadership.
    • Ensure alignment between customer needs, engineering priorities, and business objectives.
    • Provide regular updates on product development progress to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical or business field, such as Network Engineering. Cybersecurity, Telecommunications, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, Business (with a strong technical background)
    • A Master’s degree (MBA, MS in Cybersecurity, or MS in Data Science/Networking) is preferred
    • Equivalent work experience will be considered
  • Desired Experience:
    • 10+ years of experience in network troubleshooting, performance validation, or network diagnostics
    • Prior experience working with telco ISPs and deep understanding of their processes, systems, and business models
    • Experience working in or with product management and engineering teams, contributing to product decisions, and influencing product direction
    • Strong technical understanding of IoT, wireless, wired, and mobile network performance and troubleshooting methodologies and diagnostic tools
    • Very strong understanding of Wi-Fi, IoT, CBRS, 5G and fiber broadband
    • Hands-on experience with network measurement tools, such as Speedtest, Ekahau, packet capture solutions, or AI driven analysis tools
    • Ability to translate technical networking challenges into product requirements
    • Telecommunications & Network Analytics (e.g., working with mobile carriers, ISPs, enterprise IT)
    • Cybersecurity & Compliance (e.g., industry-specific security frameworks, enterprise security software, risk management)
    • Worked for or with mobile operators, ISPs, or network infrastructure vendors
