Job Description

The Analyst, Manager Research supports Morningstar’s manager research operation in Japan, delivering high-quality and timely research to investors and clients. They conduct fund due diligence, write research reports, and promote Morningstar’s mission through thought leadership. Responsibilities include researching fund managers, participating in interviews, writing rating notes, and contributing to client deliverables. The role requires strong communication skills in both English and Japanese, a keen knowledge of financial markets, and the ability to work independently to meet deadlines. The candidate should have at least 3-5 years of investment-related experience.
Must have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or a related discipline
  • 3-5 years of investment-related experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Japanese
  • Strong quantitative skills and a good grasp of statistics.
Good to have:
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or MBA
  • Experience in manager research or portfolio management
  • Experience with Python, SQL, R, or other programming languages
  • Experience with Morningstar Direct

About the role:

The Role:

The Analyst, Manager Research play a key role in supporting Morningstar’s manager research operation in Japan, delivering high quality and timely research to investors and clients. In addition to conducting fund due diligence and writing research reports, the Analyst will also support the promotion of Morningstar’s mission and research capabilities through our global thought leadership program. The role is based in our Tokyo office.

Job responsibilities:

Responsibilities

• Support the research of fund managers and managed investments domiciled in Japan.

• Actively participate in fund manager interviews and write succinct rating notes and research reports.

• Take a key role in formulating and justifying our opinions on investment strategies to both internal and external stakeholders.

• Strengthen perceptions of Morningstar’s research capabilities in Japan through contributions to production of local thought leadership content.

• Contribute to the elevation of Morningstar’s research profile by supporting Manager Research’s active engagements with the external market (wealth managers, media, regulators, and clients) in areas including (but not limited to) industry trends and development, policy and other investment issues relevant to Japanese investors.

• Support ongoing client deliverables of Morningstar’s investment advisory offerings in Japan, including reports and analytics as part of standard client deliverables.

• Handle ad-hoc client enquiries and undertake administrative and/or analytical work as required.

Qualifications:

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in finance or business-related discipline; Chartered Financial Analyst® designation and/or MBA is desirable.

• At least 3-5 years of investment-related experience. Experience in manager research and/or portfolio management would be viewed favourably.

• A keen knowledge of financial markets that has been developed both personally and professionally;

• Strong written and verbal English and Japanese communication skills.

• Strong quantitative skills with good grasp of statistics. Experience with Python, SQL, R, or other programming language would be viewed favourably.

• Ability to demonstrate initiative, work independently and prioritise effectively to meet deadlines.

• Aptitude to build effective relationships with key stakeholders.

• Skilled with PC and mainstream software packages. Experience with Morningstar Direct is an advantage.
