Job Description

As the Director of Software Engineering for Scout’s digital products, you will lead a team of highly skilled software engineers to develop digital solutions for customers and business partners. This critical role involves shaping the company's digital customer experience, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional user experiences, and driving business growth. You will be responsible for developing and owning critical applications, defining technology strategy, and managing a high-performing engineering team to revolutionize the electric pick-up truck and rugged SUV marketplace.

  • Proven experience designing and implementing robust, scalable, and efficient system architectures.
  • Comprehensive understanding of APIs, microservices, and system vulnerabilities.
  • Experience operating in start-up settings, supporting low-code tools, and driving custom application development.
  • 5+ years in leading and managing high-performing software engineering teams.

Overview

As the Director of Software Engineering for Scout’s digital products, you will be responsible for leading a team of highly skilled software engineers and driving the development of digital solutions for our customers and business partners. You will play a critical role in shaping the future of our company's digital customer experience, working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional user experiences and drive business growth.

What you’ll do

Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the electric pick-up truck & rugged SUV marketplace by achieving the following:

  • Develop and own critical applications in Scout’s digital platform that manage customer interactions inside and outside of the vehicle.
  • Develop the strategy, technology and best practices capable of supporting scalable, functional and reliable software products and their associated integrations. Identify opportunities to enhance existing digital products and propose new ideas to drive customer engagement and revenue growth.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders in User Experience and Product Management to produce plans for the digital product portfolio, providing thoughtful tradeoffs between design requirements and incurring technical debt.
  • Influence decisions on build/buy/partner, contemplating today’s needs and future enterprise requirements.
  • Recruit and manage a team of software engineers, setting the bar for quality software development.
  • Set a high bar for team velocity, code coverage, test plans, defect rates, cycle times and other software engineering KPIs.
  • Be responsible for the services that are owned by your team, ensuring 24/7 on-call coverage.

Location & Travel Expectations:

  • This role will be based out of the Scout Motors location in Fremont, CA.
  • The responsibilities of this role require attendance at in-person meetings and events regularly.
  • Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.

  • 12+ years of engineering and scaling software products, preferably with a focus on payments, ecommerce, front end and back end app development.
  • Proven examples of designing and implementing robust, scalable, and efficient system architectures.
  • A comprehensive understanding of APIs, microservices, and other complex systems, as well as knowledge of potential system vulnerabilities and how to prevent them.
  • Experience operating in start-up settings, supporting early low-code tools, and driving graduation to highly customized applications.
  • 5+ years in leading and managing high-performing software engineering teams. Direct evidence of the ability to guide, motivate, and inspire a team towards the successful completion of complex projects.

Pay Transparency

This is a full-time, exempt position eligible to receive a base salary and to participate in an annual performance bonus program. Final salary offered will be determined based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience. The annual performance bonus program is preset and not candidate dependent.

Initial base salary range = $210,000.00 - $255,000.00

Initial California base salary range = $230,000.00 - $280,000.00
