Job Description

The Entertainment Lawyer at Spin Master will work directly with the Entertainment's Development, Production, and Licensing/Distribution teams. Responsibilities include drafting and negotiating contracts, securing legal clearances and insurance policies, managing contractual obligations, ensuring tax credit compliance, conducting financial reviews, and negotiating service provider contracts. The role also involves union compliance management, rights management, creative negotiations with third parties, and advising on rights and restrictions. This is a temporary position with benefits, potentially leading to a full-time role.

Must have:

JD or LLB degree
Licensed to practice law in Ontario (or another Canadian province)
4-10 years experience in film/TV legal and business affairs
Contract drafting and negotiation
Rights management and clearances

Job Description:

What will you work on?

The Entertainment Lawyer works directly with Entertainment’s Development, Production and Licensing/Distribution Teams to ensure all legal and business affairs issues – from negotiations and agreements to copyright protections, insurance policies, rights management matters, credits and clearances – are resolved professionally, optimally and efficiently.

This role is a temporary position with benefits, tied to production timelines and deliverables. Opportunity to turn into full time regular role.

How will you create impact?

Draft and negotiate contracts, legal clearances, obtain insurance policies, track and advise on contractual obligations.
Liaise regarding tax credit compliance and eligibility, financial review of contracts, internal financing and structuring of productions.
Service Provider Contract negotiations, drafting and tracking.
Union compliance management and signatory process.
Rights Management, creative negotiations with multiple third parties to achieve necessary split of rights. Advising leaders of rights and restrictions.
High volume of contracts required on urgent basis.

What are your skills and experience?

J.D. or LL.B. degree Licensed to practice law in Ontario (or another Province of Canada) and in good standing
4-10 years working in a film or television legal and business affairs department and/or entertainment law firm.
