Job Description

This Junior Technologist position at Thales, based in Ottawa, Canada, supports Systems Engineering in developing communication and control systems. The role involves sub-system design, integration, troubleshooting, verification, and validation in lab and field environments, including active construction sites, ships, or other vessels. The technologist will ensure project work is implemented successfully throughout the lifecycle, working under the direction of the Technologist Group Lead or project authority. This hybrid role requires 0-3 years of relevant experience.
Must have:
  • Ensure all work is carried-out in accordance with company practices and procedures.
  • Ensure all work is completed according to direction from supervisor.
  • Assist in preparation of drawings (electrical and mechanical) as required.
  • Support the creation of documentation.
  • Ensure test equipment is in good working order.
  • Integrate COTS and original design modules in a multi-disciplinary environment according to a system design.
  • Implement and execute system test cases. Analyze and evaluate test results.
  • Troubleshoot systems that do not meet requirements.
  • Inspect parts for defects.
  • Interact with customer technical and non-technical personnel (military and/or civilian).
  • Participate in site preparation, installation and troubleshooting.
  • Assemble test platforms and perform test plans.
  • Supporting mechanical interface/space consideration and analyzing with the team to create effective and viable solutions.
  • Analyze, define, trace, and manage systems requirement for all elements of the solution.
  • College diploma in a technical program or equivalent experience.
Good to have:
  • Experience in a systems engineering environment, ideally in the defence industry.
  • Experience in computer operating systems and networks.
  • Experience working with Fiber Optics.
  • Experience with test software such as Labview, Wireshark and terminal emulators.
  • Experience with industry design standards, such as drawing, shock and vibration and EMC/EMI.
  • Drafting Experience in the Systems Engineering life cycle, including typical modeling tools for design such as Solidworks, AutoCAD.

Position Summary

This is considered a Junior Technologist position with 0-3 years relevant experience.

The Systems Engineering Technologist is responsible for supporting Systems Engineering in the development of Thales projects. These projects are largely defined as communication and control systems encompassing RF, digital, network and analog sub systems.

The Systems Engineering Technologist will ensure project work is implemented successfully in the lab and field environments. As required, the candidate will participate in all phases of engineering projects throughout the lifecycle including: sub-system design, integration/configuration, troubleshooting, verification and validation, as well as lessons learned and engineering close-out activities.

The environments the candidate will participate in vary from the Lab to customer premises that may include active construction sites, Ships or other vessels, both Military and Civilian.

Tasks are assigned by the Technologist Group Lead, or as delegated to the project authority.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The expectations from Systems Engineering Technologist are as follows:

  • Ensure all work is carried-out in accordance with company practices and procedures.

  • Support the creation of documentation.

Minimum Requirements

  • College diploma in a technical program or equivalent experience.

Must Haves (requirements)

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Can read and understand electrical, mechanical drawings and technical document.
  • Hands on experience building, troubleshooting, integration, configuration and testing of network & electronics systems.
  • Use of standard computer ‘office’ applications.
  • Experience in the use of common electrical test equipment.
  • Experience in the use of common hand and power tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a systems engineering environment, ideally in the defence industry.
  • Experience in computer operating systems and networks.
  • Experience working with Fiber Optics.
  • Experience with test software such as Labview, Wireshark and terminal emulators.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting of test and electronic equipment, connecting equipment in a lab environment or job site.

Special Position Requirements

  • 40 hrs/week. Overtime may be necessary depends on the demand and project schedule.
  • Physical Environment: Office/ Lab, Offsite on various platforms.
  • Travel: > 25% of time.
