Manager, Strategic Finance and FP&A

We are seeking a Manager, Strategic Finance and FP&A to join our growing team. In this high-impact role, you will report directly to the Head of Finance and serve as a key partner in leading both the Strategic Finance and Financial Planning & Analysis functions. You will be responsible for delivering insights that drive data-informed decision-making, optimizing financial processes, and supporting the company’s long-term strategic initiatives.
Substack is experiencing rapid growth, and this role is critical to ensuring we scale efficiently, allocate resources effectively, and maintain financial discipline in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams and senior leadership to align financial plans with business goals, helping to shape the future of Substack through thoughtful analysis and strategic guidance.
Responsibilities
Lead financial planning processes, including monthly, quarterly, and annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning across the P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow
Build and manage robust financial models to support strategic decision-making across business initiatives, new product launches, and growth opportunities
Collaborate cross-functionally with teams across the company to gather, analyze, and synthesize financial and operational data; translate insights into clear recommendations for leadership
Develop and evolve strategic analyses, such as pricing strategy, sales efficiency and cost drivers, and total addressable market (TAM) sizing
Track and report on key financial metrics, surfacing areas of opportunity or concern, and delivering data-driven insights to help optimize performance
Support long-term strategic planning, including evaluation of investments, partnerships, and M&A opportunities
Identify and implement process improvements to streamline FP&A operations and enhance forecasting accuracy and speed
Communicate financial insights clearly and concisely, tailoring presentations and analyses for non-financial audiences across the company
Craft and deliver high-impact presentations for senior leadership, board members, investors, and external stakeholders
Lead financial diligence and modeling for potential fundraising, M&A, and capital allocation decisions, acting as a strategic thought partner to executive leadership
Qualifications
Minimum of 6+ years of combined experience in investment banking, private equity, management consulting, strategic finance, or FP&A
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related discipline
Proven excellence in project management, with the ability to work with large data sets, evaluate and improve existing processes, and identify opportunities for operational efficiency
Strong analytical, financial modeling, and problem-solving skills
Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities, with a talent for simplifying complex topics into clear, actionable insights
Adept at building cross-functional relationships and influencing stakeholders at all levels of the organization
Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail
Demonstrated ownership mindset and intellectual curiosity, paired with a results-driven attitude
Ability to make well-informed recommendations that support execution and strategic decision-making; recognized as a trusted and objective advisor
Proficiency with G Suite and Microsoft Office Suite
Bonus: Experience with Aleph, SQL, Snowflake, Python, or VBA
Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $155,000 to $175,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.
